BY THE WAY

If you've updated to Windows 11 recently, you're probably on version 25H2.

There's a new setting in Settings: Privacy & Security.

Scroll aaaaaaaalll the way to the bottom and you'll see "Text and Image Generation."

TURN IT OFF.

Folks on here probably already know this but Asmongold is a part owner of Mad Mushroom games and OTK (who occasionally runs “direct” style showcases) - he’s no friend to the industry and his labels really ought to be fully shunned
This is legit insane btw:

Heavy Hearts dev Dammitbird received the following notice from Steam, noting “your app has failed our review because we're unable to support the Early Access model of development for a game with mature themes”

This strikes me as overcompliance and censorious on Steam’s part

and not just dev hate from gamers, this is courting investors. "look how much product we can produce with fewer workers"
This year's Summer Games Fest presentation was really concerned with how few people made a lot of those games, huh?

It feels kinda fucked up. Not just because they're often misrepresntating the real size of these teams, but because I think it's playing directly into a new(ish) flavour of dev hate.

Revenue at Duolingo in 2024 was up 41% on 23 to $748M. Net income was up by 451% for same period and yet they're firing workers. We've long been at "insatiable greed" point of late stage capitalism. People may feel helpless but there's a very easy way to kick companies like this. Delete their apps.
I have completely deleted my Duolingo. I was informed by one of my kids that the company has removed most of its employees and 70% of the company is run by AI.

I urge everyone to delete their app.
Duolingo CEO says he's getting rid of contract employees and replacing them with AI
Duolingo employees can also expect their AI use to be graded in their performance reviews.

1. LLM-generated code tries to run code from online software packages. Which is normal but
2. The packages don’t exist. Which would normally cause an error but
3. Nefarious people have made malware under the package names that LLMs make up most often. So
4. Now the LLM code points to malware.
LLMs hallucinating nonexistent software packages with plausible names leads to a new malware vulnerability: "slopsquatting."
LLMs can't stop making up software dependencies and sabotaging everything
: Hallucinated package names fuel 'slopsquatting'

UPDATE—Mahmoud's attorney says they do NOT know where he is.
They were first told he was sent to an ICE facility in Elizabeth, NJ. But when his 8-month-pregnant wife tried to visit him, she was told he's not there.
They've received reports he may be sent as far away as Louisiana.

It’s the same detention centre holding Jessica Brösche, the German tattoo artist who spent 8 days in solitary. She’s been held for 6 weeks.

The U.S. is not a safe place to travel anymore

Signalis - When I finished it I knew that I loved its survival horror gameplay, but I was also left with a lot of open questions about its story. Couldn't get it out of my head ever since and have spent several hours looking at fanart, so yeah, I guess it's pretty damn good.

Star Ocean: The Divine Force - Yes, another Star Ocean. I like Sci-Fi RPGs, okay? The third game in the series that I've played, and like the others, it is clearly flawed, but manages to endear itself to me in some weird way. I feel like tri-Ace are the last true PS2 Double-A developers around.

Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands - Now we're talking. Absolutely fantastic. I have nothing negative to say about this one. Combat system, party customization, art, writing, music, everything's great. Criminally underrated. Play it.

Inscryption - Unfortunately not for me. I liked the mystery, metagame elements, but I never could care for the card game. Deckbuilders aren't for me anyway, and by the 3rd act even that aspect stopped working. My roommate absolutely loved it though, so give it a try if you like this kind of stuff.

Astro Bot - I kinda want to criticize it for riding the nostalgia wave of whimsical fun Sony games while being the only whimsical fun game on that console, but I can't. It's too charming, too fun, too delightful, though I'd say that it hasn't quite reached the levels of refinement of a 3D Mario.

Chrono Trigger - A classic I hadn't played, and yeah, this one is pretty great. Fully deserves its reputation as one of the greats, though I personally wouldn't put it all the way up there because I did have some minor gripes with the combat system. The soundtrack is goated.
