Eno’s shoulder dipped as he stepped down to exit the street—the floor of whatever room we were entering was sunken into the ground by several feet. After we’d descended, the door slid closed behind us with a grating crunch. Several of the nearby conversations stopped as we took a few more steps into the room. It got quieter and quieter the further we went, and I somehow felt the eyes on me. “What’s wrong?” I whispered. “You look like you’re from the tower.” And what could I do about that? It wasn’t my fault that— “Here,” Eno said and placed my hand on the back of a plastic chair. “I’ll get you something warm to drink.” I sat down and all the aches in my legs and feet that I’d been trying to ignore came screaming for my attention. I was in front of a tall table, or maybe a bar. Murmuring resumed all around the room, but the tone was more tense.

The smell of smoke and stale sake drifts from the common room, where some of the locals are already deep in their cups. I won’t be able to sleep easy in a place like this. I’d rather try my warding skills against yokai in the wild than risk waking up with a knife to my throat. But this is probably the last civilized stop before the road becomes barren…and then stops being a road. If I want to gather intel about the journey ahead, this is it.

After meeting Jun he walked all the way back from Minato to Shinjuku, stopping at 7-11s along the way to chug fizzy-sweet cans of strong alcohol that made him pleasantly drunk. It was late, and Shinjuku buzzed with night. Tourist families and local students and young couples and cosplayers thronged the narrow roads, which were lined with arcades and chicken skewer shops and scam-info kiosks and glowing, blown-up faces of men and women edited into cartoonish elven beauty, huge blue eyes and desaturated skin and narrowed noses. J-pop songs were playing gratingly loud from every corner. Teenagers were feeding coins into a row of white-lit claw machines offering stuffed alligators. A gaggle of 60-something-year-old Americans had stopped in the middle of a pedestrian road, one of them repacking her sensible backpack, its contents strewn across the asphalt - a crumpled museum admission, packets of tissue, litre water bottle. Her pals stood around her sort of giggling, maybe at the thought of doing that anywhere else but here. A lone woman sat motionless on a curb with her head between her knees, the phone clutched in her hand pinging.

As she sipped on the coffee a clunking sound emerged from the stairwell. The four legged cargo drone had made its way onto the living room floor. "What now ..." Vela asked slightly exasperated at this point. - I will accompany you to the crash site - the robot declared in a metallic rustle voice. It changed as it spoke, the ship was actively tuning up the systems. The drone was part of the initial cargo drop and had helped to assemble the building months before the crew was shipped over, Vela found it creepy and had banished the robot to the basement indefinitely. But having some machine-strength now wasn't entirely unwelcome. It would have just been better to meet outside. "Okay, you can carry the beacon then, make yourself useful" Vela delegated her new accomplice, she stepped backwards, away from the kitchen area to make space for the clunky drone. It ambled on its four long legs and picked the beacon up with it's head, somehow. It seemed to attach magnetically or however they do it nowadays. At least she wouldn't have to carry it all the way. - I've uploaded as much of a local AI as I can to the cargo drone, it will be quite limited when you leave the house signal range, so be precise in your commands - The ship warned her through the comms.

"Remember back then there was even more prejudice but not my parents they took her in and treated her like a member of the family from the start. Dad moved all the rooms round so hers is the farthest possible from mine which wasn't necessary because I wasn't going to touch her before the wedding. "And my Dad puts a notice in the local paper that Mr and Mrs Calder were pleased to announce the forthcoming marriage of their son Richard Calder to Ayesha Najjar and it caused a stir back then really did. Thought they were going to drum us out of town. But the paper ran a story something like 'Local lad to marry Eastern beauty' and people calmed down a bit when they put it like that.”

Even I cringed at how bad it sounded and silently apologized to everyone I’d just offended with that ridiculous attempt. “When you talk to Jonathan or Vanessa, you don’t even try to hide it.” “I never hide it.” I countered, matching Peter’s tone. “When you’re trying to be funny.” “‘Trying’? Ouch.” “And also when you’re caught off guard.” Peter finished, ignoring my protests.

Even these more isolated alleyways still felt crowded compared to the Habitat. Though wide, the way they winded made every bend a blind spot, and it seemed as if behind each one a local awaited just to startle her. Windows were scattered across the facades of rusting buildings, of a thousand shapes and sizes, casting their glow across the street. For each pristine synthwood door, another had been barred with chunks of scrap. It seemed to Yana like a place between places, defiant in its identity while lacking one at all. “New to non-modular housing?” Rook asked. “Sorry?” “You’ve been glaring at everything for the last minute or so, all intense-like.” “That’s just what my face looks like.” Yana was used to this comment, but it nevertheless gave her pause. “How many people live here, six million? Seven? I expected it to be more efficient, that’s all.”

Yet Nygel loved the place. Well, not so much ‘loved’ as didn’t hate. Well, that was debatable too, but it allowed him in, which went a long way to being considered his local. People tended to leave him alone here, which he appreciated far more than the attention he usually got, which was often insulting and casually violent. People didn’t like Nygel. He bothered them. Not Lally, though. Lally didn’t just let him hang around. Lally actively looked out for him. Protected him, sometimes. Covered up all of Nygel’s many mistakes.

I’m in the middle of musing on the horrible possibility of going back home, and how I’d rather deep-throat a wasps nest, when my phone vibrates. I glance down to see a message from Joey. Knowing him, he’s inviting me to dinner tomorrow tonight, which is technically tonight. When was the last time I had a proper dinner? Oh, right, three weeks ago, when Brianna took me out on our first and last date. A nice local place and I even paid for my half. Probably shouldn’t have ordered the salmon, but then I thought I’d still have a job and I’d been saving up a bit. The salmon was great. The date… not so much.

I know it was a long time ago, but you have to…” “You know I have a photo of him, right?” He brought out his phone and entered the folder with his oldest pictures. “Why didn't you lead with this?” “It’s not a very good one,” Egon said, then handed Ava his phone. She looked at the picture he could almost draw from memory. It was a scan of an old polaroid. It featured his baby self on the arm of his mother, who featured eyes widened with surprise at the photographer. His father's reaction was more extreme. He had attempted to throw his arms up to hide his face, just a moment too late. But because he turned away at the moment of the photo, his face was unrecognisably blurry anyway. One was still able to see that he had an athletic build and was not too much taller than his mother.

I pass the picture I’m holding to Annie. In it, me as a toddler is trying to feed Lyra a slice of brightly colored birthday cake, with my hands of course. It’s a mess but Lyra is glowing with joy. I don’t know when this was, I don’t have any memories that far back.

As I woke up to the moonlight pouring through my window, something had its eyes on me. Slowly moving my head, I tried to get a picture of what it might be, but nothing seemed immediately apparent. Clearly, there was nothing in the room with me, but something was watching, seemed to be waiting. I wanted to sit up. I wanted to find my clothes and get out of this itchy, woolen gown; although, the bedclothes around me were soft and light in their comfort. My feet met the cool wooden floor beneath the bed, and I sat back down as quickly as I’d tried to get up. Leaning over toward the headboard, I stretched my hands out until they latched onto the molding of the frame so I could pull myself up against its stability. Every single fiber of my body felt like it weighed a million pounds.

“Yes, well, company policy dictates that maintenance gets done during magichine downtime,” Dav said, quoting the dictum from memory. “I've been meaning to ask you about that,” Valin said, eyeing the emergency stop button. The button was covered in a thick layer of glass, that itself was covered in a thick coating of dust, that-- if one could manage to get to it through the numerous tripping hazards that had been placed in front of it-- if cleaned would reveal a very life like picture of the deadly Enzirian scarab that was known to devour flesh. Of course, the scarab only managed this in swarms, but it didn't prevent the many stories that had been told around Port Savant about how dangerous they were and whether they could survive in the climate of Sedarin. Valin returned his attention to Dav, “When is that?” Dav was taken aback and looked around nervously. He coughed lightly into a clenched fist to center himself and adjusted his collar. He straightened himself up and, with all the company shareholders' past and present on his side, said, “It happens when it happens.” “Right, so, I'm going to stop the magichine before she dies,” Valin said. “Wait!” Dav shouted, somehow louder than he had been previously, “You can't do that.” “No?” Valin asked, sarcasm dripping from the word. “Please tell me, why not?” “Well-- think of the loss in numbers,” Dav shouted again, pointing to a giant arcane counter slowly ticking up.
