The mark of ancient work was everywhere written into the landscape. Low cliffs with unnaturally crisp edges. Hillsides made of piles of blocks covered in grass and shrub as though the the children of giants had left their playthings behind. The mine was no less busy for the early hour. The peal of hammers striking plug-and-feather wedges in rhythmic sequence broke the silence of the hour as men split the granite into clean, squared blocks. The dark stone was then heaved into waiting carts, wheels groaning as they picked their way down the winding road. This place had been Edric Morrigen’s charge once, and the memory of his orderly hand still hung over the hill.

The Dip ran over the face of the city like a scar, huge and jagged. A chasm that was said to have been created in an earthquake when the Fifth Sister imprisoned the Sixth. It ran parallel to the river and no one knew how far down it reached. The poorest of Dragaul's citizens were crammed down there and many clerks were threatened if they misbehaved they'd be put on duty to the Dip. One enterprising Baron had created a competition where the Dip children competed against each other to create the most beautiful roof gardens. Generations of junior horticulturists were born, families feuded over flowers as each successful child was brought up to the Keep. And it kept the Dip looking vibrant and colourful for those who lived above it. With it being late spring, the tulips were out. This year an entire roof, ten times the size of these offices, had been covered so that it gave the effect of a standing yellow bear against a black background.

Gloria busied herself with cooking. Vivid orange smears covered the normally pristine white worktops but it was a relief to see some colour in the room. Gloria had even spent a lot of credits on real flowers that were already wilting under the harsh lights. The florist had told her they were sunflowers but Gloria had liked them as the petals were the same colour as Isley's eyes. More splatter covered the kitchen as Gloria started to blend the last few chunks of sweet potatoes. And then she wiggled in excitement, causing the blender to veer to the left, when the blue light started to blink rapidly. Isley was nearly home. Smooth orange splatters covered the pristine surfaces and a thin, black scraper emerged from the edge and ran over the dirt to suck it up. Mess was not allowed in Isley's home and Gloria had, eventually, got used to living somewhere that lacked both grease and dust.

“Good morning to you, erm…” The priest hesitated in mid bow, searching for the proper term of address. “Sacerem,” Wren whispered on his left. “Sacerem Letitia,” Spencer finished, straightening to meet the shade’s fiery gaze. She inclined her head ever so slightly at the honorific. A soft grating sound rumbled behind them as the door leading outside opened. The Fain priests turned and walked in their stiff, jerking gait towards the door. They didn’t look back or slow down. Clearly they assumed their guests would follow. “Not much of a greeting,” Bruce muttered behind the Fains’ backs, slightly offended. “Well, we barely understand anything they say. Maybe they didn’t think a conversation was worth the effort,” Spencer offered in an attempt to be fair to their hosts. The quartet shuffled out onto the landing and were greeted by a wall of warm, moist air and the bright glare of unfiltered sunshine. Spencer winced and threw up an arm to block the offending light. The memory of his dream, strolling through the night time streets of Urbe Mortuos where people conducted their business at a more reasonable hour, called alluringly to the priest. “Here,” Wren’s voice prompted Spencer to lower his arm and squint in her general direction. She was holding out his hat. “Thank you,” he took the offered headgear and tugged it down over his crown to cover the foolish grin that smeared itself across his face.

An ideal present for Oula would be a foraging course so she likes what nature provides. I’anthal is scout leader enthusiastic about nature and Alitzah likes it when the weather is decent. Got to be Gormenghast books by Mervyn Peake. The setting has so much history, culture and details that there is no escape and each twist through the castle leads you to a new surprise. From Fuschia’s eccentric rooms to Swelter’s kitchens, there’s endless scope.

They looked down and their eyes got huge and sparkly. "OH MY GOD IS THIS—" I flailed my hands and they hushed to a whisper, "is this a little Reshketh robot?! How did you get this?" "The voice command input system. I'm told you're familiar?" They nodded enthusiastically. “I've been calling it Patches; it's been helping me out." Their eyes, impossibly, got bigger and sparklier as they lifted the drone into their lap like a puppy. "You named it Patches?"

“No, don’t move,” Tom insisted. “The medics will be there in a few minutes, and if they don’t find you in that car seat, I will make sure they hold you overnight in the med center for observation. See if I don’t.” “Fine, I’m staying put.” “Good. Because if you don’t get back here in one piece, I won’t be able to kill you myself.” “It’s sweet that you care.” I leaned my head back against the headrest and closed my eyes. Everything hurt, kind of like I had been hit by a car, appropriately enough. It would be nice to just rest for a few minutes. And that was when I heard the whoosh of the gasoline igniting. I could not catch a break today. I muted my earpiece and swore colorfully. A spark from the electrical system, or heat from one of the engines must have caught the leaking gas. Flames licked the outside of my car. I couldn’t stay here, or I would cook. I wrenched the door open and stumbled out, then glanced back at the other car. The succubus hadn’t moved. If I left her there, she would burn alive. Perhaps a fitting end for her, but I couldn’t just sit here and let her die.

From my short story “My Body as a Spacesuit.” Pim tries to repair her jumpship.
She closed the valves, securing the hoses and her helmet. After a pirouette, she reoriented to the reactor access and opened the hatch. Pim wriggled through the drifting mess of shredded metal plates, praying none of them ripped her suit. When she had overloaded the system with her blind jump, the fusion reactor had buzzed, rattling the fillings in her teeth during her hasty shut down. Now the eerie quiet of the power source picked at her nerves. Remote sensors showed high levels of residual radiation. Enough of the shielding had fallen off to irradiate the access tunnel. The doughnut-shaped plasma chamber clad in rippled magnets kept her safe from the worst of the X-rays during operation. Outside the tokamak containment system, a jacket of coolant tubes snaked around the cramped space. Reflecting off the light from her helmet, water glistened along several breaks, held in place with surface tension. Keep moving, Pim. That’s what you always do. Rose’s advice when Pim broke a leg misjudging a low gravity leap. She’d leaned on Rose to get back to the shelter. The danger from gravity had been invisible and so was the radiation. Stay focused and fast. Fix the leaks so she could restart the reactor and keep the oxygen pumps going. She found the first leak and started working, ripping strips of duct tape to seal the hole. The tape floated while she brushed away the water. Fix, then pull to the next leak, every second radiation bombarding her body. A shadow dimmed her view, a layer filming the inside of her helmet.

Eventually, the half dozen books floating around Muriel snapped shut all at once and zipped through the air to rest in a neat pile on a nearby table. “Golden and Glorious, even in defeat, General Kinileaus turned his blade toward his own breast and fell upon it.” Muriel’s voice was an echo that Wren felt more than heard. It was like it came from the very stones of the library rather than the semi-transparent woman before them. “Oh, don’t be so dramatic, Muriel. It’s a new cataloging system; no one is asking you to fall on your sword.” Archivist Doleman huffed, but her eyes crinkled at the corners with a hint of hidden laughter. “Alright then, this staying up all hours and crawling about in my nightgown is a young person’s game. I’m going back to bed. You know your way out, Brother Spencer?” “Of course.” The priest inclined his head. And then they were alone. With the ghost. Wren wasn’t sure how this was supposed to go. Did they come right out and ask questions, or should they work their way up to it? Did they need to word everything in the form of obscure historical quotes? Was Spencer going to sing again?
