Elena had read about Ephtas and what she might expect when she arrived. In her history book, an image of King Merit had been printed nearly a century ago. He’d been a young man then, with a rounded face and wide eyes. She’d been told that these days, the image would be a likely approximation of both Prince Erryn and Prince Drake. Elena still found it difficult to imagine time on such a scale; she was of common blood, and though her parents had placed her in proximity to Touched as often as possible, she had simply not been alive long enough to notice their agelessness for herself. A familiar pang of envy washed over her. She could never be perfect, not compared to them.

I tug out the folded photograph I use as a bookmark and open it. A picture of me, my mom, and my father, taken himself with the camera turned around. An analog selfie. My mom and baby-me are blurry around the edges, as if underwater, shoved up against the fuzzy white line of the crease bisecting the photograph. My father’s face looms large in the lower left foreground, his young face rendered with exceptional clarity, tauntingly oversized. The irony of it never sat well with me. The more accurate visual metaphor for his presence in my life would probably be the smash of his arm in the corner, a pixelated wash of taupe marring the border. I know only four facts about my father: (1) Insu Shin was from a well-to-do family in Korea but left home as a teenager. (2) He and my mom met in their twenties, then immigrated to New Jersey when she was pregnant with me. (3) His mental health sharply declined, and he left us before I turned one, ranting that he had to return home. (4) He loved poetry. And maybe now I could add: (5) He died in Alaska trying to find his way back to Kardia. Maybe.

Alitzah would home alone the place especially for when Cailo turned up to help house sit. Oula has been out shopping for supplies so is too late to stop Cailo from getting a blow torch to the head. She finds I’anthal on the front lawn looking at figures behind curtain and confused if anyone’s home.

Erryn seemed about to reply, but a sharp sneeze escaped him instead. Again, Rolfe clicked his teeth in disapproval. “Really,” he admonished. “Your penchant for self-endangerment is infuriating.” He stood, motioning for Erryn to do the same. “You must remove your overshirt, at the very least, or you'll never get dry.” Obediently, Erryn rose and removed his heavy overshirt. Rolfe took it, wrung it over the little copper sink, and laid it over the edge to dry. “And you?” Erryn asked quietly. His tone held Rolfe in suspense. “I'd rather you didn't fall ill either.” “I run warm,” Rolfe assured him. “And I've only one layer.” His eyes narrowed by the slightest margin. A roguish grin played on his lips. “Unless it would please Your Highness for me to remove it?”

A light voice floated through the door. He grumbled, pushing himself upright. “Door open!” The thing wheezed into the recess in the wall, a grind of metal that reminded Toren too much of delicate spine and grinding discs. It was Elara of course, bubbly as a highland spring. Less mossy though. Balancing three coffees in two hands. She nodded at Rob, “Could you grab one of these Doc? Kinda hot.” Rob smiled while taking one of the coffees, “Very kind FO.” She set the other coffees down, blowing on her fingers to dissipate the heat. He shut down the urge to tell her that did nothing. “How’s my favourite Engineer doing?” He shot her a look that he hoped carried expletives. “Mr Grumpy pants huh? You taking your meds?” He nodded. “I took em. Not very good.” She glanced first at Rob, then at the sideboard. In amongst the detritus and spare tools, the pack of tablets gave him away. Elara raised a brow at Rob. “How many did he take?” The Doc raised 1 finger. Toren waved a hand, “Quacks always over prescribe. No offense, Rob” She passed him a coffee, scooped the tablets and threw them over. “Don’t be an old fart Toren. You’re not that stupid — yet.” Rob looked a little uncomfortable in the crowded space. “I’ll make my excuses now that the patient has the correct dosage of medication. Thank you for the coffee FO.”

Erryn pulled a wooden rabbit call from his pocket. With a little luck, he could lure the foxes from their den. He was vaguely aware of a larger animal nearby causing rustling movement, but this was not his aim and so he paid it no mind. With a sharp exhale, he brought the rabbit call wailing to life. The horses were used to this, but it startled Rolfe, who resisted the urge to clamp his hands over his ears. However, the noise quite frightened whatever else had been in the clearing, and its sudden sprint through the nearby brush unnerved Etiquette, who reeled back in alarm.

Caul nodded. “Yes, the same way McLellan got into the Bridge when the power was out.” Toren felt the smile growing. “Pressure circuit! Okay lets try to frazzle that fucker in there. Best bet is behind the head plate I guess?” He looked to Elara who nodded, “There is some exposed wiring back there. Best case we kill it, worst case we piss it off.” He was gripping the tablet tight as he guided the Vole back out of the vent. “Come on you little bastard!” He aimed at the unsuspecting Android, still curled up on the charging pad. The Vole raced across the deck until it was level with the neck of the curled machine. The shock prongs extended until they almost touched a series of cables behind the white faceplate. “Here goes nothing!” A dazzling flare of light blocked out the sensors on the camera. The screen went black before details slowly filled in again, digitised breakup filled the screen. Through the broken lines of picture, Toren saw movement. Suddenly the camera was violently thrown backwards and the image blinked out. The directional controls went grey on screen. “Well,” he started, “we did something.” Elara nodded slowly. “Let’s go find out what.” She looked at Kaili, then at Toren. He shook his head. Before she could ask the question, he said, “She’s coming with us.”
