#WIPSnips - Demon King Daughter - only use of 'zigzag' is in book 3, so you get something that could've been described that way in book 1 - Kyoka has magic, but loves melee. She chooses to get in close.

Kyoka scattered across the battlefield with speed and ferocity that was difficult to process or comprehend. She was only clearly visible at moments of impact or landing, the end of claw-slashes or ripping dives. In between, she was a skittering mass of shadow staining the air.
For herself, she was reveling. She rushed between her targets, grinning the entire time, her claws braced, her tail lashing like an angry snake from pure speed fighting the air around her.
Kyoka churned through a final rank of Sentinels at knee level in one direction, and as their bodies started to collapse, she ripped back along her path to obliterate their heads and shoulders. She landed into a sharp skid, already focusing toward the last Sentinel on the field even as the others fell to ash.

"You don't wish to return to your domain?" Kyoka had to ask in open confusion.
"No," was Hasava's simple reply, and she considered it enough.
Kyoka and Masuyo shared a little glance, and Kyoka continued across their dinner table, "You were very proud of how you had it organized in my old life. What has changed?"
"You are not... The King is dead. And once Torlash ambushed me and trapped my mind, Abaddon fell under his sway regardless. My failure is complete at this point. I would prefer to move forward as your vassal, my Lord."
Masuyo was a bit sympathetic, but also sensed she had no idea what kind of ruler Hasava had been either. Perhaps it was for the best she wasn't in charge? Or was Torlash worse? She had too little context to have a strong opinion. All she could focus on was, "T-then where will you live...?"
Kyoka muttered to the side for her mother, "She wants to live here."
Hasava said clearly at the same time, "I can best serve you both here."

Depends on view point. I was heavily influenced by Jane Austen, but I never actually write period romance. I took inspiration from the intellectual and emotional drama rather than the setting.

Mr. Ito blinked, watching the spell itself. It flickered and pulsed. Dark energy flashed and burst within it, the two kinds of magic reacting like angry animals against each other, but the function of the spell wasn't impeded.
"What you're seeing," Kyoka began quite casually, slowly drawing everyone's attention, even Mr. Ito himself, "is the conflict between your light-based magic and demonic magic. As you know, however, humans are fully capable of using demonic magic, because it's simply a methodology. You can already tell I'm not possessed, but I am curious if you realize the inherent flaw in this kind of examination spell?"
Mr. Ito sharpened his eyes, while some of the students started to murmur about 'demonic magic.'
Kyoka continued, "This kind of spell will only catch demons up to a certain threshold. Beyond that threshold, their ability to conceal themselves is greater than the spell can penetrate. So, even though I've voluntarily demonstrated I'm not possessed, according to your spell, your suspicions will remain. So are you going to treat me like a threat, or are you going to treat me like a student, Mr. Ito?"
