Imo, it's primarily two factors: ruthlessness and willingness to kill. Even in service to something objectively good that darkens things to the gray.

Honest question: what makes a character morally gray? Having character flaws? Being amoral or self-serving? Is there an assumed ethical framework when listing the trope? Presumably most people irl are morally gray rather than “black” or “white” so why is grayness considered noteworthy?

Seina had to check, "Do... do we look like a couple?" She cringed mildly. Kyoka was actually curious, though unbothered, and looked to Himari as well. Himari stared, sucking her lips between her teeth as she clearly panicked, with no idea how to answer. Seina groaned, pitching her head back with both hands raking down her face. "Oh, come on! None of the boys will EVER consider asking me out now! They all think I'm lesbian!" Himari tried to ameliorate. "W-well, it's just, uh... Y-you were so angry, and you two clearly spend a lot of time together, and you're the only two girls in the whole school that wear the boy's uniform, so I... couldn't... help the idea... popping into my head. T-that's why I asked! I didn't want to make assumptions, a-and obviously, if I was third-wheeling your together-time, I'd feel really bad, so I... just..." Her blush had spread over most of her face. Seina groaned yet again, but just slumped forward. "We just both hate skirts. Closest I have to this prompt is the age-gap drama for Taegen and Selene in NICEF. The various aspects of how problematic it is, and how their genuine care/love balances with those concerns, is taken seriously through several critical scenes.

Masuyo and Issei in DKD are good parents, so that might work for day-to-day stuff. Abby in Cry Wolf is very down to earth, so similar advice. Maybe Djilia if I had to pick ONE person from NICEF.

Himari twisted, marching for the exit. Nori actually bolted out, and grabbed her daughter's arm. Himari was so shocked by the physical grip, she was successfully halted and wrenched backward, staring up at her mother. "Do not interfere. We finally have her dead to rights. You've been tricked, Himari. You have to let this go," Nori listed out with a dark tension in her voice, her teeth gritting after. Himari narrowed her eyes rather than growing afraid. "No. I'm not standing by this time. She's a student, and under legal age. An interrogation is completely inappropriate. She has to have a guardian present at the very least." "I'm sure her mother was called. You are staying here. You need to recover from whatever she did to you." Himari actually wrenched herself free, which startled her mother in turn, and braced back, clearly ready for her mother to try restraining her again. "All she did was protect me! Book 1: Ogres (large, gorilla-like, with scales, and wolfish heads) and Fiend Bats (give a bat a humanoid, tiny body, spindly limbs, long claws, and venom) are probably the most prevalent shown! They're low-grade demons, but still threats!

He grinned for her, and moved to the fridge, while she sat at a stool against the island in the middle of the kitchen. "So what's up with training?" he prompted as he got to work. "Me being, uh... melee-focused is weird. They're expecting me to cast spells and stuff. Like at range." Issei shut his eyes for a moment of pained realization. He pinched his nose for a moment more, then calmed his own frustration. "I'm really sorry, Pip." Seina fidgeted a bit. "Don't feel bad, Dad. I'm really proud of what I can do with your training. Don't worry about that." "Is it going to cause issues with the training class?" he moved on, both of them fully aware he still felt guilty as he moved across the kitchen with a few ingredients. "Not... really. The instructor is going to focus on helping me... aim it at range." They shared a serious glance for a beat. She'd never been able to make her power leave her skin before, and he'd tried to lean into it while giving them something to share and spend time together on. "...You're good with it?" he checked at last.
