A city in Hell…
Serasthial lead on again, through streets that zig-zagged up the mountain. There were few people out, and those Helena saw were strange. People with the faces and heads of animals, hybrid creatures, people whose proportions were swollen or shrunken in unusual ways all passed quietly by them, disappearing into dwellings or courtyards as they went, minding their business. They passed by sections that looked torn out of the mountainside by massive claws and the road ended abruptly once, forcing them to clamber up a rock face where hand-holds had been rubbed clean by the occupants of the city. Another hole in the road was ringed by a jaundiced yellow substance that fizzled on the rock. Someone had placed a set of rickety boards to bridge this gap and locals passed over it breezily, as if they didn't notice. The higher they got, the wider the streets and the grander the homes.

Surprised I had multiple choices for this word. MC is checking out his companions on a long and dangerous journey to see if any are dangerous. Here are some that fall under "not a threat".
There were also the trio of merchants, each putting their own wares onboard. There were rugs and assorted textiles, fruit and vegetables, crafts that I couldn’t identify at a distance and more. Each of them had fine clothes, reflecting the fashion of the merchant class at the moment; a lot of multicolored patterns zigzagging along the sleeves, baggy pants, and two of them wearing feathered caps. I didn’t want to introduce myself; there was a nonzero chance I had stolen from one of them at some point in my career, or I worked with someone who did.

In an instant Renato and Murabaa were surrounded by white flames, before Murabaa could even react, Renato began his assault. Quickly throwing a variety of blasts into the white flames; intense flames, sharp ice, jagged rocks, and quick bolts of lightning. The way Renato moved was like a yoga master's recording being put on fast foward. Murabaa had to quickly go on the defense using magic wards and his halbred to block the many elements. It was nigh impossible to follow what was going on with how quick each magic blast was coming through, and Renato showed no signs of exhaustion or slowing down. Until he began using a single stream of bitting cold through one portal that Murabaa had to use both hands in a ward to fend off. Renato then slipped his staff through one of the flames, snaking it under Murabaa's feet. The bird noticed quickly jumping over it, and taking a small bit of the icy flurry. With the opportunity, he quickly jabbed his halbred through in retaliation. Renato dodging the strike easily. To which the bat responded with a fireball, which Murabaa used to roll out of the small collection of firey wisps. Scorpio was mesmerized by the pure display of magic, he'd never seen anyone do anything like it before... when Murabaa suddenly spoke up; "I thought I told you to go all out?" The prince simply asked, Scorpio winced at the mere idea that the bat wasn't even using the full extent of his power. "I just wanted to see if you could even handle the advanced course." Renato simply noted before the arena completely filled with a swarm small white wisps of flame, looking like a night sky full of flashing fireflies. Scorpio wasn't even the one fighting but... if each one of those wisps were portals, the mere thought made him turn pallid. "Lets begin the master class."

Xiuying still had her back to her and her arms crossed, but she half-turned her head to the door. “Thank you. For the tattoo.” Askaly couldn’t avoid a smile, no matter how inappropriate it felt. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

A grimy form, like a misshapen cocoon, floated in the back of the cave. Frayed strings sprouted from it in a zigzag pattern, weaving an impenetrable mesh. But these filaments were not webs. It was darkness. Solid, decaying darkness. Black splotches sullied the ground, and though it was faint, Ashrah detected residues of spiritual energy in them. Of those who had attempted to break through this forest of shadows and failed. She stretched out a hand, and before she even touched the dark matter, her skin sizzled. She removed it, inspecting the wisps of smoke exhaling off her palm. Not demonic shadows, either, but one coated in Tarhmun. “Trapped here for so long, I nearly lost hope. No one had the mettle required to release me. No one proved worthy of my blessing. But we do not surrender, do we, Ashrah?”

Reaching around Ryo-kun, I pull one of the small knives from his belt and stand with my back to his. He blinks, but doesn’t object. The three rokurokubi wind toward us, pressing in on all sides. Our knives aren’t strong enough to sever their powerful necks, but I’m silently hoping Ryo-kun has more tricks up his sleeve.

When she had first arrived in the largest city in the former country of Forsythe, she had expected to miss the quiet life she’d had on the farm. Running had been the hardest thing she’d ever done, but after what happened, there hadn’t been another choice. The city had been a rush of new experiences, living on the street, fighting just to survive, being discovered by the Forsythe Rebellion, fighting not just to survive, but for freedom. It had been years since then, but in many ways, it still felt like yesterday. She shook her head, there’d be time for introspection later. She climbed up out of the hole in the ground, closing the hatch and taking the time to carefully re-cover it with dirt and mud. Then she wiped her hands on her skirt, sighed, and made her way through the narrow, winding streets of Talar. The walk took over two hours in the cold, foggy rain, by the time Lucia arrived at the Tarnished Varnish tavern, she was desperate to get out of the weather. An accomplished assassin she may have been, but she still hated being out in the rain.

Her arms and legs were a crisscross of thin cuts, from which little beads of blood welled. The floor tiles were spattered with red—not heavily, thank goodness, but enough to make it obvious that there was danger afoot.

The night’d started off bitter, even at street level, and by the time Sabbat had made it back to Old Town the temperature on the rooftops had plummeted to the kind of raw, vicious cold that stopped breath, stole feeling from fingers, and made any attempt at full-speed roof-running suicidal at best. Lucky, then, that that wasn’t what he was planning. *There’s a difference between hunting and chasing. No sense wasting time and energy racing over the rooftops when all I need to do is wait for prey to come to me.* It wasn’t going to be that easy, mind. Old Town was big – bigger than most people gave it credit for, given half of them only ever saw it from the bridges in the other Quarters – and the rooftops were a maze of rat-runs and hidden passages, constantly changing as people added storeys or knocked down half-rotten extensions. Add in the summer fires and the deliberate traps and deadfalls the gangs built along the borders of their territories, and you had a labyrinth easily as deadly as anything the old Adakari mage-kings had been able to dream up and a hundred times more vicious for being home-grown (say what you liked about Sacaan, its reputation for bloodthirstiness was sodding well deserved). Course, that all meant a good deal less if you knew it – and, for all he’d spent a fair amount of his life so far at sea, Sabbat was more at home on the rooftops of Old Town than half its residents were on the streets. *Which means this bastard, whoever he is, is in my territory. Which means I get to make the rules.*

White text on a black field: Tuktuk stomped an excited circle around Lukas. “More treatos, bigjob! Follow Tuktuk now!” The creature collapsed into a generally spherical shape and rolled off across the clearing at a speed Lukas would have struggled to keep up with before he was turned. The really convenient thing about following Tuktuk was that the little guy was an eager little juggernaut. Bushes, trees, and lesser stones all fell before Tuktuk as it carved an unrepentant path of destruction through the woods. Lukas almost felt bad about the ecological disaster in progress as he kept pace a few meters back but he had to assume that this was just the way Tuktuks got around and the miles-long, zigzagging tract of ruined countryside was the natural order of things. Of course, if that were true, he might have expected to run across at least one other Tuktuk track in the two hours he spent following his new pal. Which he didn't, but it was convenient to look the other way, especially knowing that getting home would be a no-brainer now.

“Miss Jennifer?” someone asks from my right, and I spin my head around to see a very unexpected sight. A large caterpillar, coloured yellow and green in a dazzling zigzag pattern, stood in the hallway there. Half its body is upright and regarding me with an intense gaze from two large and dark compound eyes, while the other half stretches behind it. I can see that the other occupants in the hallway are avoiding going anywhere near this… person, or even looking at them. Must be someone important. “Yes?” I say in confirmation. “Good. I am Dame Voliannas, your legal council in this lawsuit against the Kowellian Entity. I will be handling your case today and for the rest of the trail,” the caterpillar, Voliannas, declares in a crisp, no-nonsense tone that reminds me of the second grade. If Miss Teller had been an insect, this is what she would have looked and sounded like. I resist the urge to shudder at the memory, and stand up to meet Voliannas eye to eye, and extend my hand.

The next day Vince and Nick went for a walk on the path by the side of the creek that wound through the town. Vince carried an Esky containing a picnic, while Nick flounced and picked flowers making Vince laugh. "Very funny, but he's probably right. Let's go stealth mode," said Vince. "Stealth mode?" said Nick. "Two blokes having a picnic on the riverside, that should throw them off the scent." They found a flat spot with nobody around and laid everything out. "OK, we have some figs, small mandarins, little crisp breads, Camembert, lamb medallions cooked this morning with a pear and vinegar sauce. Nothing gay about that," said Vince. "Just the same as me and the other blokes had on the building site at lunchtime." They sat and ate, looking at the creek rippling in the sunlight. A couple of people walked by without anyone paying particular attention. "I'm impressed by what you can do on a camping stove, by the way," said Vince.

One of few chapters I wrote completely out of order and might still get chucked and rewritten from scratch when I actually get to that part of the story, but it’s the only bit I could think of that has enough moving around to think “zigzag”.
Soon, we were running at full-pelt past the edge of the front lines. Light and Dark fae cut at us in near equal measure as we darted between them, but with all feeling gone in the damage wrought by Assara’s magic, we felt none of it beyond the heat of blood dripping down our back. We broke through their efforts to cut off our advance, making use of their confusion as to exactly whose side we were on. Neither. We had one aim, and that was all. All we cared about was reaching him.

The Dip ran over the face of the city like a scar, huge and jagged. A chasm that was said to have been created in an earthquake when the Fifth Sister imprisoned the Sixth. It ran parallel to the river and no one knew how far down it reached. The poorest of Dragaul's citizens were crammed down there and many clerks were threatened if they misbehaved they'd be put on duty to the Dip. One enterprising Baron had created a competition where the Dip children competed against each other to create the most beautiful roof gardens. Generations of junior horticulturists were born, families feuded over flowers as each successful child was brought up to the Keep. And it kept the Dip looking vibrant and colourful for those who lived above it. With it being late spring, the tulips were out. This year an entire roof, ten times the size of these offices, had been covered so that it gave the effect of a standing yellow bear against a black background.

I zigzag my way through the crowd. If the guests remained seated, navigating the narrow spaces between the tables wouldn't be such an effort— A little boy bumps into my legs and almost bounces back. The kid wraps his short arms around my knees to stay upright. He's in a cute tuxedo, his royal blue bow-tie marking him as a relative of the groom. The toddler is the most adorable child I've seen in a long time. But he's too little to be running around on his own. I look around to see if, hopefully, one of his parents is rushing towards him. Unfortunately, the guests closest to me don't seem to be on the lookout for a child. Hillsides made of piles of blocks covered in grass and shrub as though the the children of giants had left their playthings behind. The mine was no less busy for the early hour. The peal of hammers striking plug-and-feather wedges in rhythmic sequence broke the silence of the hour as men split the granite into clean, squared blocks. The dark stone was then heaved into waiting carts, wheels groaning as they picked their way down the winding road. This place had been Edric Morrigen’s charge once, and the memory of his orderly hand still hung over the hill.
