I actually think there’s a polisci explanation for this: established political parties don’t shift all that much or that radically in the course of someone’s lifetime, so once a voter figure figures out their basic politics in their early 20s, they basically then just stick with their team

*And, I'm sure this came into the equation for some of them: to avoid paying expensive legal fees. Which has to be factored into the lawfare being waged in Hong Kong.
