I was wondering what Mamdani's first executive order would be, and I'm not disappointed by this.

He has wiped off the books EVERY Eric Adams executive order issued on or after September 26, 2024, the day Adams was indicted on federal bribery charges.

Another year another cancer in retreat!

#ScienceFTW
GOOD NEWS! A group of patients with an otherwise incurable form of T‑cell leukemia have seen their cancer driven into REMISSION by an innovative immune therapy known as BE-CAR7. 82% of patients reached deep remission and 64% of patients have now been disease-free and OFF therapy for THREE years.

An article about this as a way to engage the economic elite into mobilizing would go further than a removed post.

Like “Oh no will you even be able to ski next year” or “your next ski trip will cost an entire mountain”
And yes I know that my flying is contributing to this. I do try to minimise my carbon footprint in other ways (not driving, living in an apartment) but yes I am a giant hypocrite. Most people are. Collective action problems are hard

Magical thinking
I think this might change. Through some combination of caching, token cost reduction, or local models, I think the endpoint might be plain-English written specs and test suites as source code, with LLM compilers
Exactly. If the prompts were the source and the bot was built into the toolchain we would be off to the races. But I think it would turn out to be a bad approach. The best programming tools are precise and orthogonal, even the highly expressive ones. You will always regret introducing fuzziness.

Good! It’s about time jet setters get to feel the real ravages of their behavior.

This guy flies from America to Canada to France to complain about skiing.

“You can overwhelm science” is so 2025
Dr. Oz on the "super flu": "Every year there's a flu vaccine. It doesn't always work very well. That's why it's been controversial of late. But like many illnesses, the best news out there is if you can take care of yourself so that when you do end up running into the flu, you can overwhelm it."

User: Hi! I'd like a wake up call.

Hotel front desk: The entire modern web infrastructure you rely on is held together by a handful of volunteer run opensource projects, and if one lead maintainer decides to delete their repository today, the global economy would stall by noon.

Accession doesn’t only benefit countries that join; as the successive waves of enlargement show, the whole of Europe benefits.

Kinda amazing insight and might be valuable to know the market share of politically relevant news stories. (Which versions people believe)
And, repeating myself just to be clear: The true story (Fraudsters stole money and pushed off accountability for a while by saying it was racist to probe it) is losing market share to a wilder, less true story (citizen journalists uncovered the scheme that Dems covered up to steal elections)

From a jewel heist to crumbling galleries, it’s been a dire year for the world’s most visited museum. At least France has woken up to its predicament, says political commentator Agnès Poirier

GOOD NEWS! Researchers have shown Alzheimer’s disease can be REVERSED- not just prevented. Using a potent neuroprotective compound called P7C3-A20, they found RESTORING balance to a central cellular energy molecule (NAD+) not only PREVENTED disease features but REVERSED them, EVEN at late stages.

Everyone always wants to know “Who is the American gestapo?” but no one ever stops to ask “How is the American gestapo?”
Just thinking... we give so much attention (as we should!) to the victims of state violence, ie, people sent to CECOT.

But, we give little consideration to the psychic violence suffered by those tasked with carrying out the physical violence.

Yes, they "chose" those jobs. But...

Well now, would you look at that? A massive, 4-YEAR-LONG study of NEARLY 30 MILLION people in France found that individuals who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine had a 74% LOWER risk of death from severe COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated individuals and ZERO increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Thinking about technological advances and this story again:
One of my last conversations with my grandmother was about how she was getting audiobooks downloaded to her ipod wirelessly from the library. She said, “it’s remarkable!” When I said “haha yep,” she got stern.

“Norah. You may not appreciate this, but I took a horse-drawn bus to grade school.”

Just gonna say this again for games sphere cus we get the same question:

Networking doesn't mean schmoozing up to famous people, it means making friends with your peers. Then in 10 years, 20, one of you might be famous? And sure you're still helping each other cus well yeah friends.

Make. Friends.
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +
