Many of you already know that our colleague and founding board member, Fobazi Ettarh, has passed away. We want to take a moment to acknowledge her loss and honor what she meant to libraries, our community, and her friends and loved ones.

For those unaware about the significance of the light poles during the song El Apagón it’s because of the Puerto Rican power system and the constant black outs. There have been a lot of protests on the island over this.

It was transforming the biggest NFL stage in the world into a sugar cane plantation that did it for me.

Like, the multiple layers of turning an American icon into a plantation and highlighting the history of exploitation of Black and Brown bodies by the NFL and American colonialism simultaneously?

I will eventually shut up about this but Bad Bunny’s use of the power lines is an outstanding example of how to communicate about climate and energy issues. Not about who is the smartest nerd in the room and spewing numbers but about people’s actual lives. Genius.

If you were hoping for some sort of overt political statement: see the literal plantation Benito created to perform in.

Listen, same 😒😠
I really can’t watch any of these ice flip videos without thinking about how a white man is being rewarded for accomplishing what a Black woman was punished for doing 30 years ago

Surya Bonaly was an incredible athlete and she was treated like shit for it

Iconic 👑
OK "god bless america" and then naming every country in the americas from south to north is absolute king shit

Every single word of this 👏🏾
Benito is a threat b/c he makes art so alluring and enjoyable you want to understand everything about it and then you end up learning about sugar and slavery and colonialism and the Taínos and Hawaii and then you probably have some thoughts of your own, and that's why art is powerful and dangerous

I cannot be the only person thinking about how Surya Bonaly was treated for doing the same back flips on the ice that these white boys are getting applauded for at the Olympics today

I’m so proud of all the Olympic athletes speaking out about the bullshit that is happening here. That’s what patriotism looks like.

I love watching the Olympics and absorbing the arbitrary standards. You end up watching a sport you are only dimly aware exists, frowning and saying, “Oo, that guy from Norway had his knees greater than 90 degrees, now he’s bronze at best.”

5. His base agrees with him.
6. He will do it again.
7. No one in power will hold him accountable.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

A lot of people cannot just start a paid newsletter or become freelancers to sustain their careers. The sports, metro, and international desks did work that requires *team* resources, like legal checks, documents, access to archives, and long-term beat experience.
