I struggle to see why turning ourselves into a society so unwelcoming that even those afraid for the lives are deterred from coming is something we would actually *want*.

With the aged P in M&S. She is buying ready meals for one and I am not sure whether this is a comment on my cooking, my company or both.

Can anyone who thinks the new settlement rules could reduce a "pull fsctor" explain why the 2022 Nationality And Borders Act (only temporary protection if come without permission) and 2023 Illegal Migration Act (can't claim asylum at all if unauthorised) didn't stop the boats/reduce the flow

Met a lovely sherrif last night who told me that his wife used to follow me on Twitter until I posted a video of the kitchen window in Torridon crawling with midges.

I came to this country as a child refugee. No English, no certainty, no idea what my life could become. Britain gave me refuge.

Not on a timer, not with conditions attached, but with a chance to grow roots.

UK set to limit refugees to temporary stays
Shabana Mahmood is expected to say the era of permanent protection for refugees is over, in major changes to the UK's asylum and immigration system.

Since it is apparently time to engineer cultural cohesion, we should set out a plan. The aim, of course, is that we should all ultimately adopt the culture native to Essex. It will need to be staged so in the first phase we will be requiring Yorkshire people to be more Scottish.

If we accept someone is a genuine refugee and they build a life here, perhaps have children born here, what is the advantage to us of expelling them once we’ve persuaded ourselves that their country of origin is safe?

It just doesn't. At all.

The common law imposes no restrictions at all on how the UK state must behave. None. How could it, it is part of our domestic law, not an international law norm.

My decision to put off getting a flu jab until after: a 2 hr flight; 8 hrs at a conference with 100+ people; a 2.5 hour journey in a packed train full of people coughing; a dinner with several hundred people and a 6 hour train journey back to London, suggests I’m more optimistic than I thought.

I’m not saying I won’t moan about it when the time comes to pay, but I think the Govt should raise my income tax because I am profoundly worried about the state of public services.

Seasoned travelers: a red light went off when I presented my flight boarding pass. I was asked for my passport and to sit to one side. A few minutes later I got the passport back. When I asked what the problem had been all I got was “they just needed to ask a couple of questions”. Any ideas?
