No. In so far as it is an Americanism it is a survival of an older English usage. Our objection to it would be sounder if we complained it was an archaicism.

In this photo, taken 30’years ago today, you can see me trying and failing to understand how someone this wonderful had freely chosen to be with me - a question I still struggle to answer now. I have not deserved to be with her, but dear God, am I grateful.
