It’s still too hot, he can feel it on the back of his throat. “Never could tell what?” “Whether this was a ‘secret lovers’ thing or ‘will-they, won’t-they’ thing.” Ed feels his hands tremble just a little. He slams the mug down so hard on the table a little liquid splashes on the table. Fuck it. “Reckon that’s none of your business,” he says. Lucius looks gleeful, which just pisses Ed off. “Well, that’s more than I got out of Stede,” he says with a sigh.

Lonely Stede!
The last thing he did before boarding was finally called for his flight and he went on wifi mode was to open a tab for the latest Blackbeard fic, posted that morning. He'd been waiting for this all day. He made sure to hit "entire work" and to keep the page open. Trudged up the steps, shuffled along to his seat, stowed his bag, settled in with his airplane pillow, and stuck his face in his screen. He barely noticed the plane taking off, hardly said a word in greeting to his fellow passenger. He just started to read, and that was it, he dropped right into Blackbeard's world. Soaked up his word choice, his voice, his humour. Barely even blinked back his tears as they began to roll down his cheeks, quietly and steadily. Everyone had their favourite authors; everyone identified with one or both of the leads on the show, Raven or Mermaid, and at least one of the secondary characters. And the way Blackbeard wrote about them...Stede didn't actually see himself in the Blackbeard fic version of Mermaid, not the way he did in other fics, or his own stories. But the way Blackbeard wrote about their relationship... Every single time, about a third of the way in, Stede would come across a phrase–so simple, so innocuous–and it would awaken the *longing* inside him, and the tears would flow. Blackbeard must have someone truly special in his life, someone kind, to be able to write such love. To make kindness sexy. To speak of forever, and mean it. Stede longed so much for that, it hurt.

Stede was lonely a lot, but that didn’t mean he didn’t also have anxiety about it! He drafted a dozen versions of the text. -Hi this is Stede. I think I found your keys assuming this is Ed. -Hi is this Ed? I am Stede and I may have found your keys -Hi Ed, this is very odd to tell someone but I believe my bird friend deposited your keys in my lap -Did you lose some keys recently? I think I found them. BTW this is Stede and you are Ed. Ugh. He was backspacing them all when his finger hit the green button and a familiar buzzing of a ringing phone cut through his remaining neurons. He had long enough to panic before a warm voice with a familiar accent purred down the line a terribly inquisitive, “Hello?” “Oh no. Oh um, you’re Stede? No, I’m Stede, that was very silly of me, that’s not what I meant. You’re Ed? I mean are you Ed? Oh god I’m so bad on the phone,” his stupid words raced away without him. The man on the phone laughed, but it wasn’t meanspirited. It was warm and kind of sweet. “Deep breath, mate.” Stede did so, sort of hypnotized by the warmth in the voice. “Phone anxiety’s a bitch innit?”

#WIPWednesday #1 - It’s the Midnights sequel (“I’ll save you a seat”) and Ed is going through it a bit - but Stede’s there for him 🌃💕 #OFMDfanfic

I love this scene (they’ll be fine btw because they talk now)
“I know you saw your therapist today. Is there anything you’d like to talk about?” Stede pauses for a moment. “It’s okay if not.” Stede often checks in like this, and fuck, it’s so endearing and respectful of Ed’s boundaries. He loves Stede a little more every time he asks. “Yeah, maybe,” Ed admits, knowing that it’s better to talk to Stede and willing to let him initiate in his gentle way. “Okay. It doesn’t need to be right now. When you’re ready.” Hearing the love shining in Stede’s voice goes a long way to soothing Ed’s fears. “I want to. Just. Scared.” “Can I hold you?” Stede asks. “Then you can talk, or not.” “Yes, please,” Ed mumbles. He doesn’t move, but that’s alright because Stede lifts the duvet and slides in behind Ed, spooning him, putting an arm around his chest. The weight of that arm and the feeling of Stede’s breath on his neck helps ground Ed even more. He feels warm. Safe. Treasured. He still can’t speak, though. Can’t find a way to untangle his thoughts to find the point where it makes the most sense to begin. So he waits. “Can you tell me why you’re scared?” Stede asks, so fucking patiently, like Ed’s a scared kid. And maybe he is—he and Jenn have talked a lot about the care of his inner child. “I’m afraid you’ll leave me.” A rushed whisper. “Oh, Ed.” Stede is quiet for a long moment, and Ed knows that guilt at the way he left still eats at him sometimes. Ed’s got to be brave now. “No, fuck, not like how you think.” He needs to look at Stede for this, so he turns his body to face Stede and moves the duvet aside, blinking at the low lamplight of the room. “I know you won’t up and leave.”

#WIPWednesday, and yes, this is Ed in fedora* from my new(ish) murder mystery au set in England in the early 1930s. It has Agatha Christie vibes, too! (Or so I hope 😂)

*I've been thinking about Ed in fedora for an *embarrassing* amount of time, considering that the fedora appears only briefly 👀
“Ed!” Stede greets, unable to stop himself from smiling. His heart skips a beat when Ed looks up at him with an answering grin, taking off his fedora only to reveal a neatly arranged bun that keeps most of his hair back from his face, save for two cheeky strands that frame it and make him look breathtakingly beautiful. (Stede gulps and chases the thought away). “Stede! Great to see you!” “Likewise,” Stede answers, hoping his face won’t betray how much of an understatement it is. “How was your trip?” Ed winces, in a way only he can, all his lovely face crumbling, his short (scandalous!) beard doing nothing to hide the way his lips curl. “Long? Smelly? Boring as hell? Honestly, man, let’s just skip the pleasantries, ‘kay? You know I hate them.” He does, and Stede adores him for that. He’s never admired anyone more than he admires Ed and the way he holds himself, easily putting on the mask of a cold, calculative, and efficient businessman who is so different from the Ed he got to know in the couple of weeks.

Promised a WIP today didn't I, and I'm nothing if not neurotically reliable, so here's a wee snippet of baby's first fic. In which Stede is massively overreacting, but to what? Find out...eventually.
