So I did the Bluesky "roast" thing and it said, Sarah, maybe lay off the jellyfish posts.

But there should only ever be MORE jellyfish content. Everyone knows this.

Ran across a note from 2022, when I was researching for my Hexham book festival commission, and I needed to share:

John Wallis in the Natural History and Antiquities of Northumberland (1769) referred to a jellyfish as ‘the large loco-motive Sea Nettle’

Thanks. As you were.

Well.

I've never seen this movie. I've never seen any of the National Lampoon movies.

But since I'm going to be on here anyway, I guess I might as well give it a go.
I made a bot that will post "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," clip by clip, between now and Christmas Eve. That's 12–13 clips daily, 24/7, just so you know what you'd be getting into. (Clips will auto-delete a few days after being posted.) It starts now.

I have a new piece up at @msnownews.bsky.social, on the recent NJ supreme court case banning shaking baby syndrome evidence, using it to discuss both the generally shoddy nature of all forensic evidence but also the legal profession's on-going refusal to confront our current data-driven world.
Opinion | New Jersey's ban on 'shaken baby syndrome' claims in court points up a larger problem in the legal system
John Pfaff: The state Supreme Court ruling underscores how thin empirical support is for much of the forensic evidence used in criminal cases.

1. kludge a working prototype together, don’t worry about the code AT ALL. the point is understanding how the requirements function in reality

2. destroy the prototype completely. build the app for real using my better mental model

We are told: the product now has Gemini. We added Rufus. You can talk to Bixby. We've integrated Alice. Chat with Poob. Log on to Poob right now. Poob has it for you. Poob has it for you. Poob has it for you.

We are never told "so what." Even the teams working on these products don't know anymore.
When teams don't understand their own product
A usable product starts with the conceptual model, but designers have "optimized" that work out of the profession. It's time to bring it back.
