🌱Today’s flower/plant is another of my favourites, Bee Balm (Monarda aka Bergamot). These wonderfully scented flowers have hummingbirds hovering over them from early morning (sometimes waging fierce, swooping aerial battles while chittering loudly) till last light,as well as bees, butterflies & moths.

Crocus tommasinianus 'Whitewell Purple’ in the sunshine today. Apparently sometimes known as ‘tommies’ (anyone call them this?) the species is named after Muzio G. Spirito de Tommasini (1794–1879), a rare combination of botanist & politician who became mayor of Trieste in 1839 (pic from Wikipedia) 🌱

This is my favourite portrait of the moss Bryum capillare, Capillary Thread Moss, on an ancient fallen trunk of Sambucus nigra, Common Elder. The development of corky bark is common with age, but this is a particularly splendid example.

Leucobryum glaucoma, a cushion moss.
the specific epithet is one that auto corrupt always wants to change to glaucoma, fair enough! glaucus as a colour epithet describes pale tints of greyed blue-green; this is a good example. It also describes the colour cast seen in glaucoma in human eyes.

Tortula muralis, Wall Screw Moss, the scientific name is suggestive and descriptive - tortula having echoes of tortuous, full of twists and turns, and muralis, meaning of walls, as in mural - wall painting.
wall screw, stop sniggering you at the back

Reminder that if you were vaccinated for measles between the late 1950-1980s, you got one dose, not the two doses that are recommended now. You will think you’re protected, but you may not be! Get your titers checks or get a booster.
