Nadim Zahawi arrived in the UK from Iraq as a child refugee. His family claimed asylum once they were here. Today he has joined Reform who will stop all in country asylum applications. Under his new party, his own family fleeing persecution would be immediately deported.

If you were personally not racist but you ran a party that contained this level of racism, you'd resign on the basis you had somehow ended up organising racists into a serious campaigning force, which had never been your intention.

On the other hand, if you *are* a racist...
"More than a third (37%) of Reform UK voters said they would be prouder of Britain if there were fewer people from minority ethnic backgrounds in a decade’s time, and 10% [compared to 3% overall] said it was important to have white skin to be a good British citizen."

I already agree with this in principle - citizenship is an untouchable status or it is nothing - but also for reasons of prudence. “The Home Sec can revoke citizenship when he/she deems someone’s online output sufficiently offensive” is a v dangerous precedent to set with Reform leading all polls.

Agree with every word of this

We've gone from 9% of social care staff coming from outside the UK and EEA in 2021/22 to almost 25% in 2024/25

The govt has no near-term replacement

It means either:
1) staffing shortages or
2) councils spending far more to attract staff, with no extra funding

Even with my bedrock low opinion of Labour, I was clinging to some shred of hope that even they would realise that stealing the last remaining possessions of people who have fled for their lives was a disgusting policy. Turns out there isn't a bottom to this particular barrel they are scraping.
For fairly obvious reasons when people flee their countries of origin to seek asylum elsewhere they can't carry much. Often things like jewellery are all they have to hold onto. This isn't just stripping people of "assets", it is stealing their memories. 57/

The government seems to be trying to simultaneously claim it can deliver Reform’s agenda better than Reform, while also about once a month sending out someone to decry Reform’s racism.

It’s genuinely sort of amazing that they still haven’t realised why that doesn’t work.

What is truly pathetic about Labour is that this is all they have got. They have failed so spectacularly already, despite a whacking great majority, to even attempt to govern positively that all they have is punching down on marginalised groups and saying "oh but Reform will be worse".

Based on popular artists 'similar to' music I listen to, probably LCD Soundsystem.

Or maybe Bring Me the Horizon or A Day to Remember. I thought they were the same band for ages.
What is your biggest musical blindspot for someone precisely your age?

For me - an elder millennial - it is that I have never knowingly listened to INCUBUS, nor could I name even one of their songs if you put a gun to my head.

An entire segment of the population is being repeatedly told that ’illegal immigration‘ - which is in fact barely 5% of immigration - is the dominant problem in this country. This is a media-driven phenomenon.
A case study in far right propaganda success. Tory governments run down public services over decades & then the the populist right breeds in ruined communities by scapegoating Black & brown immigrants.
