I feel like we have the opportunity to turn David Lynch's quote into this moment's "Keep Calm and Carry On" and it's a far better rallying cry too.

In 202x, the industry used AI language models to "learn" from published copyrighted music and generate professional revenue without asking the owner for permission.

Industry and governments have no problem with this. Robbery in broad daylight is legal because it is sold at a monthly flat rate.

Napster was founded in 1999, and millions of households downloaded music they did not pay for, but they did not use it to build a business.

The industry and governments did everything in their power to shut down Napster and we were punished with Spotify, which continues to rob and cheat musicians.

Taking a page from Mr Rogers: do the thing you feel good about doing. (Not just what makes you happy, but what you're proud to do and be and talk about and share.)

And my own addition: it's never too late to do it. (Do it scared, do it bored, do it however you need but do it. At 30, 40, whenever.)
people over 30 quote this with some life advice for the rest of us?

one of the most important things I’ve learned is that acquiring a skill is literally uncomfortable

that awful moment where you feel confused and stupid and embarrassed? it means you’re about to learn something. and it’s *mandatory* if you want to get better

I am surrounded by people who are outsourcing their own thinking to ChatGPT and they are quickly and obviously becoming dependent on it for even the most banal tasks. Once again, the "figuring it out" is the important part. Yes, you can use a crane to lift weights but you will not get stronger

Let me also add that you can be into things BY YOURSELF.
You can enjoy things without having to have other people enjoy them too. Do a hobby just for you. Do things alone.
Enjoy the mental quiet of doing something in solitude without any input from other people.
Personally I would just recommend getting a hobby that’s not based around fan consumerism. Take up gardening or crochet or salsa dancing or literally anything. You can make friends with hobbies as easily as with fandom and the friends you make might even be normal and not terminally online

This Yougov survey contains an important finding: people who rely heavily on ChatGPT rate it as being "good" at tasks that we ABSOLUTELY know for sure it is very bad at

imo, this is a strong piece of evidence these heavy users simply do not ever check outputs

“As protesters marched by Homan’s waterfront home on Saturday, a sign on a neighbor’s lawn—a photo of which was shared with me by rally attendee Ginger Storey-Welch—read: ‘WE NO LONGER HAVE A DIFFERENCE IN POLITICAL OPINION. WE HAVE A DIFFERENCE IN MORALITY.’”
New — I spoke to the school principal of Sackets Harbor, NY, where ICE handcuffed and disappeared a mother and 3 kids (including a 3rd grader). It’s also the town Trump Border Czar Tom Homan calls home.

Cook tells me about how the small town is taking on enormous power to bring the students home:
Try that in a small town
ICE disappeared a mother and 3 children. Neighbors of Trump's Border Czar said hell no.

There is no misunderstanding about the political nature of Ghibli art, there is no irony in using AI to generate bad versions of it. The defiance of its humanity is the point. It’s fascist bullies shouting none of it matters and you can’t do anything about it. They’ll do what they want.

old Soviet joke for our times:

Guy stops by the newsstand every day, scans the front page, doesn’t buy the paper. One day the vendor asks what he’s up to.

Guy says: “looking for an obituary.”

Vendor says “those are towards the back of the paper, comrade.”

Guy says: “not the one I’m looking for.”
