“Ooh, perfect book by Anishinaabe author & illustrator!”
“Wait, did she say Ashley Fairbanks like I follow on Bluesky?!”

My beginner ELs made “Day in My Life” slideshows comparing their life in their home country to their life here in the U.S. Yesterday they presented their projects to students in our school’s Leadership and Service class, and it was an incredible experience for all! #ELsky

"Let it be that great strong land of love / Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme" (7-8)

I would guess that most of us have read this poem. Some of us (*raises hand*) have brought it into our classrooms.

"Let America Be America Again" by Langston Hughes

Let's read it again. #PoemADayJuly

Teaching is hard. But sometimes a former student you taught 10 years ago invites you to celebrate Eid with her family, and her cousins help your daughters fly kites while you all eat Bengali sweets together! 💙
Immigration enriches our communities.
Eid Mubarak to everyone who celebrates!

My friend
from this distance
I cannot give you
a shoulder
against which to lean

And my friend
from this distance
I cannot give you
a hand
to clasp for warmth

Alas, my friend
from this distance
all I can give you
are words
saying you are not alone

So, know:
you are not alone.

They told me parenting would be hard.
They didn’t say I’d be managing airborne transmission, collapsed institutions, and mass delusion before my morning coffee.

On a recent flight my seatmates learned I was a writer and asked my opinion on AI. They didn't understand genAI is based on work stolen from authors, and they DEFINITELY didn't know about the energy costs. Both shocked them. People just don't know.
Info on its energy gobbling should be in every news story about AI. It is newsworthy. It is inseparable from the tech itself.
It's all fun and games until …

"Professor Gina Neff of Queen Mary University London told the BBC #ChatGPT is "burning through energy", and the data centres used to power it consume more electricity in a year than 117 countries."

The Washpost, which is bleeding millions of dollars and shrinking its staff, accepted -- and then rejected -- a $115,000 ad that criticized Elon Musk.

Anyway, here's the ad that the Post's business side didn't want its readers to see ⤵️

Apparently Republican calls typically outnumber Democrat calls by large margins.

And calls MATTER.

Make your voice heard.

Download 5 calls app.

It provides scripts, phone numbers, basically all but makes the call for you.

If you call now, chances are you can leave a voicemail.

DO IT.

9yo enthusiastically explained how they had a lockdown drill today & since they’re in a portable this year, they lie down on the floor instead of hiding under desks… presumably b/c the portable walls are so thin they’re more worried about bullets coming through the wall before someone comes in? 😭

Today we had to secure my school right as students were being dropped off due to a community situation… but the “secure” was initially announced as a lockdown, and I’m still shaken by seeing a hallway full of kids run full speed into classrooms with terror in their eyes at the word “lockdown”. 😭
If you’re an educator and regular school shootings make you think ‘I will not take a bullet for other people’s kids,’ that’s okay.

There’s nothing wrong with you and everything wrong with a country unwilling to protect its most valuable resource.

Today everyone at our school was encouraged to bring special foods for lunch to celebrate their culture an family. While many brought just their own lunch, others brought enough to share! In both cases, the pride and joy were so much fun to see (and I got to enjoy a delicious lunch!) #ELsky

Very impressed with the new Molly of Denali Thanksgiving episode! From the Wampanoag friend saying “We want people to know we are still here” to Grandpa Nat explaining why and how he observes a day of mourning to the kids gathering elders’ wisdom to create a celebration honoring their traditions…

My newcomers loved our fall hike walking field trip through the woods behind our school. Did a scavenger hunt for different types of leaves, but their favorite thing was the sycamore trees! They were all so shocked to see trees with white bark! “¡Profe, un árbol blanco!”
