I've increasingly come to view cynicism as the seedbed of totalitarianism, both because it can paralyze the opposition and because it implicitly validates the might-makes-right ethic of the authoritarian.
i have been reading Tom Ricks’ “Fighting the Good War” which is a military analysis of the civil rights movement, and one thing that comes abundantly across is that movement leaders and ordinary people made it a practice to refuse to fall into despair and cynicism.

This is how it's done. If incumbent Democrats won't do the job, their primary challengers can and will use this to make sure someone else does
The Republican Congress has chosen to give away its authority and power and now we are being told Trump plans to occupy Venezuela. We don't cry for Maduro. We demand the following of our laws and Constitution. He is already threatening Mexico and Cuba will be next. Ann Wagner is silent.

War is extremely bad.

War based on lies but supported by Congress is worse.

War based on basically nothing at all and eliding Congress is breaking new ground on heinousness.

I wouldn’t either. And I don’t think that makes her a bad socialist at all. Cost per wear!
If I were about to be the first lady of New York City, I wouldn't feel even an iota of a twinge of a wisp of guilt over treating myself to a pair of $630 boots.

I’m not yet persuaded to join DSA (whole lotta theory-heavy white sausage fest vibes as far as I can tell, locally) but I’m down for social democracy. New Deal/Great Society/single payer etc. without the white supremacy this time around. Nat’l Dems seem to have no idea how many of us are out here.
again, when I say that random white women in the suburban midwest are radicalizing and are openly looking for a way to make it productive

I wouldn’t feel as if it were Christmas if I didn’t share Balmain’s 1955 cocktail dress. I can only imagine how the wearer felt, arriving in this perfect Christmas gown. To all those who celebrate, I hope you are enjoying peace with favourite people. Sold via #KerryTaylorAuct #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

I did a lot of Christmasing earlier in the month, so I’m enjoying a chill quiet day. Merry Christmas to those who celebrate, and to those who don’t, I hope you had a great day and that we weren’t too annoying. ❤️

Everyone in the government that was involved in sending American people to the CECOT concentration camp must go to prison.

Prison. There must be consequences. Starting with Kristi Noem.
Yes, CECOT is a concentration camp in the guise of a prison. The Venezuelans were the first people to *ever* be released from CECOT since Bukele opened the prison in January 2023. Seriously. The first.
These are concentration camps. No other way to describe them. Truly horrific, and none of it surprising in the least.

There Is No Mary Problem in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’
George’s vision of his wife without him is essential to the film, but critics continue to miss its true—and profound—meaning.

Wins like today are important in the fight against an authoritarian regime. They expose the state. They remind people that they should stand up and fight back. They inject some faith back into institutions. They push back against the zero sum thinking that can doom resistance.

I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

As has been the case the the past several Christmas seasons, I’ve found O Holy Night’s 3rd verse to hit especially hard:

Truly he taught us to love one another;
His law is love and his gospel is peace.
Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother,
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
