This week, City Council will vote to pass a ban on algorithmic (AI) software that landlords use to inflate rent prices.

@portlanddsa.bsky.social along with renters and allies will hold a rally at Portland City Hall in support of the ban.

Sincere or not the fact that this is being said publicly is a really good thing.
BASH: We have seen these attacks from the president at other people. It's not new. And I haven't heard you speak out about it until it was directed at you.

MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE: I think that's fair criticism. And I would like to say, humbly, I'm sorry for taking part in the toxic politics.

“But you ran on cleaning up the garbage!”

Yes…and people are not garbage. And a lot of the garbage at encampments comes from illegal dumping from housed people.

We should just stop people from becoming homeless in the first place.

Portland’s Mayor, much of City Council, and many Portlanders spent recent days aligning themselves directly with Trump’s policies towards our precariously housed and homeless neighbors, while rabidly promoting a local extension of it.

It’s been utterly disgraceful and profoundly disappointing.
This is far worse than anyone expected.

Trump's HUD plan would cut *two-thirds* of permanent housing and push as many as 170,000 formerly homeless people back onto the street—redirecting funds to work mandates, forced treatment, and encampment sweeps.

All as mass internment camps are being built.

I’m disappointed that we didn’t pass our amendment to redirect money from sweeps to upstream solutions like rental assistance, food assistance and immigrant and refugee support. But, I’m proud of the work that went into it and the absolute resolve in my colleague @councilormorillo.bsky.social

Just ONE time my cat tricked me into believing his food dispenser didn’t work so I gave him extra dinner and now he yells at me every night because he thinks he gets TWO dinners! Basically made the auto dispenser irrelevant.

A prison of my own making.

There are a lot of Portlanders who consider themselves progressive but turn reactionary when they see visible poverty.

The urge to just make poverty disappear from sight instead of working toward holistic solutions is why we don’t have nice things in this country.

Poverty is a social creation.

Here's another piece about how Portland's methods, ie sweeps without bountiful supportive housing and services for people to be "swept" into, do not work, and kill people www.propublica.org/article/port...
Portland Said It Was Investing in Homeless People’s Safety. Deaths Have Quadrupled.
The city responded to an increase in homeless deaths by intensifying encampment sweeps and adding emergency shelter at the expense of permanent housing. Experts say this has perpetuated the problem.

And can I just remind everyone that police have a Special Revenue Fund that they are MANDATED by the feds to spend down? Just untouched dollars, sitting there. You can’t supplant the budget with it but it’s pretty flexible.

Our constituents have more courage than we do. Shameful.
I do think this is a point of radicalization because a lot of angry, angry normal people were ready to dig in and suffer a lot in order to make fascists suffer a little, and their resolution was sold out and made into a mockery

Oh man, it’s happening everywhere!
Progressive activist Katie Wilson has pulled ahead of incumbent Bruce Harrell for the first time in the Seattle mayor's race, but the election remains too close to call. Results released Monday afternoon show Wilson leading by 91 votes.
Wilson takes a razor-thin lead in Seattle mayor's race
Katie Wilson has earned 49.83% of votes, compared to Harrell’s 49.79% in election results updated Monday. The race remains too close to call.

You can't end homelessness without housing.

Portland's Mayor removed the expert leading us toward proven solutions (social housing = what works in Vienna).

The City Council voted unanimously for this work. Our community deserves better.

I voted HELL NO on a CR deal that betrays millions of people who rallied, organized, and voted to save health care for 20 million Americans. Giving into a bully does nothing to stop him. I’ll keep fighting against Trump’s authoritarianism and attempts to gut community resources.

Over the weekend, the Mayor started calling nonprofits warning them their funding would disappear if this passed. 🙃 Except… most of them don’t even get money from that sweeps budget.

Nice try though.

We basically have a split council and the left has to mobilize if we want to win on these crucial issues.

The reactionaries with show up foaming at the mouth and councilors on the fence have to see that there is the same or greater energy in favor of funding rent assistance.

Organize or lose.
I don’t think people understand how organized pro-sweep turnout will be to wednesdays council meeting.

Register for item 8 ASAP. If you can’t make it, testify in writing:

Indeed. The idea that @councilormorillo.bsky.social's amendment is a huge problem is just nutty in this context.
The idea that this vote hinges on whether people think sweeps are good or bad is so bizarre to me. If the Mayor and CA want to do sweeps, then wouldn’t finding the money to pay for it be the first step? They propose to blow through their Contingency because they don’t have the money.

Our amendment doesn’t cut those things.

Mayor Wilson could’ve called me to clarify and ask questions before blasting us in a newsletter, but of course he has to find a scapegoat when he doesn’t magically end homelessness on 12/1 by warehousing people.

Looking forward to clarifying this tomorrow.
The Impact Reduction Program also provides trash abatement, which is essential in maintaining clean, walkable sidewalks for all Portlanders. We shouldn‘t cut their budget.

Just talked with a professor from France who informed me that they just don’t do evictions in the winter where he’s from and that that’s extremely normal. It would be a BATTLE to get a policy like that in Portland.

We’re honestly barbaric in the United States. It’s absurd.
