So many indicators right across the board down here in the concreted parking gardens of England:
"..in Kent there has been an annual average decline in insects of 23% since the survey began in 2021.."

(We carry on in motornomativity, increasing climate extremes around us. This is fine😜)
Kent bug splat survey shows 'troubling' fall in flying insects
A new 'splat' survey shows bug numbers have plummeted, but experts say this can be reversed.

Working with West Berkshire Barn Owl Group yesterday, we installed two new Barn Owl boxes on a farm in our area.
Hoping for a better breeding year in 2026. Nesting success down by 90% this year, as vole shortage/spring weather gave little chance for the owls to reach breeding weight.

Some better news about Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers.
#ukbirding
Something to celebrate - our 2025 Lesser Spotted Woodpecker report - successful breeding season, the most nests monitored & highest number of chicks fledged per nest since we started in 2015. Acoustic monitoring giving amazing results too, download here www.woodpecker-network.org.uk/images/L_S_W...

Although the presence of Black Redstart has been suggested as a symbol of economic decline and inactivity (see Cocker & Mabey) it is posted here purely because it is a beautiful Chat (this one at the decommissioning Dungeness power station recently).

I've finally got around to curating a selection of films about the #climate crisis 🎥

There's lot of mediocre climate films out there, but for me these stand out head & shoulders above the rest 🎞️

They make excellent resources for classrooms, lecture halls, or community cinema's 🎬

A filthy twitch perhaps but as I was in the New Forest anyway, delivering work for an exhibition, and after the Shatterford GG Shrike failed to show, it would have seemed rude not to pop over to Holbury to see the Boat-tailed Grackle. That puts me on 197 for the year (my best year ever).

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Today, I led one of my monthly 'Intro to Berks Birding' walks for @berksbirdclub.bsky.social at Moor Green Lakes, joined by Robert Godden, reserve Bird Recorder. We found 51 species, including Goosander, Green Sandpiper, Siskin and this Tawny Owl in its regular spot. I love doing this!

RIP Mani. He was the same age as me.
I enjoyed his playing. If you haven't heard the recent interview on the Rockonteurs podcast, it's worth a listen -as are many of their episodes.

BOC members had a superb weekend birding the North Norfolk coast. 111 species seen, including a gorgeous Pallas's Warbler at Titchwell but the highlight was the thousands of Pink-footed geese flying over us to roost in the Wash each evening.
