Working with West Berkshire Barn Owl Group yesterday, we installed two new Barn Owl boxes on a farm in our area.
Hoping for a better breeding year in 2026. Nesting success down by 90% this year, as vole shortage/spring weather gave little chance for the owls to reach breeding weight.

A filthy twitch perhaps but as I was in the New Forest anyway, delivering work for an exhibition, and after the Shatterford GG Shrike failed to show, it would have seemed rude not to pop over to Holbury to see the Boat-tailed Grackle. That puts me on 197 for the year (my best year ever).

I just signed and numbered my 3,308th 'I'm glad you're alive!' woodcut print. This stack will be exhibited at spudWORKS, Sway in the New Forest 4th Dec-10th Jan, with my handmade sign saying 'FREE. PLEASE TAKE ONE'.
I've been doing this since 2013.

Today, I led one of my monthly 'Intro to Berks Birding' walks for @berksbirdclub.bsky.social at Moor Green Lakes, joined by Robert Godden, reserve Bird Recorder. We found 51 species, including Goosander, Green Sandpiper, Siskin and this Tawny Owl in its regular spot. I love doing this!

I had a wonderful weekend in Norfolk with @berksbirdclub.bsky.social We saw over 100 species including huge flocks of Pink-footed Geese flying to roost on the Wash and three year ticks: Velvet Scoter, Bittern and Pallas's Warbler (a lifer for me).

It's not a great photo but it's mine. A Brambling, in my home village of Mortimer.

This Ruddy Shelduck was at WWT Welney, yesterday. The BOU list says
'Last recorded in an apparently wild state in 1946. All subsequent records are considered ... of British or European captive origin.'
Is its status under review? I've heard there may be a breeding population in Norfolk

Nice (not-yet-lumped) Green-winged Teal at Welney WWT yesterday, from Lyle Hide.
I was surprised to see so many Whooper Swans have arrived already (no sign of any Bewick's Swans).
A Glossy Ibis dropped in briefly and a female/juv Ruddy Shelduck of unknown provenance was also present.

We had planned a day at Rutland Water today and spent a happy morning there but news of the American Golden Plover at Eyebrook Reservoir, sent us eight miles down the road. A filthy twitch? It would have been rude not to go. A lifer for me.

Yesterday, I joined my two local bird clubs for a joint day-trip to Pennington Marsh, Hants. We noted 63 species including Little Stint, Spotted Redshank, Bar-tailed Godwit and a nice Grey Plover moulting out of summer plumage.
The last of the swallows were still flitting about.

A fine day in Berkshire. This morning I spent time with fellow Marshians stomping the marsh at Fobney Meadow to maintain the habitat.
After lunch the County Recorder found a juv. Ring-necked Duck on my local gravel pit - my first of the year.

A five mile walk this afternoon from my home, around the northern side of Stratfield Mortimer parish produced the first Whinchat I've ever found in the village, as well as Garden Warbler, juv. Stonechat and a flock of Meadow Pipits.

One for the music-loving bird enthusiasts. What five tracks would you add to my bird-related playlist?
Here's the first five:
1. Eels - I like Birds
2. Buffalo Springfield - Bluebird
3. The Beatles - Blackbird
4. Guillemots - Redwings
5. Fleetwood Mac - Albatross

What else?

Bar-tailed Godwit hiding behind a bank at Pagham Harbour (Church Norton) yesterday. My 184th bird of the year.
But I also dropped my notebook somewhere out there 😞

Today was a day for juvenile waders at Berkshire's Queen Mother Reservoir. Two Ruff (only one in the photo) and Knot, passing through. These were my first Knot within the County - my 199th Berkshire bird.

Whinchat, Wheatear and Woodlark were among the highlights of today's walk on Greenham Common with the Newbury District Ornithological Club.
It is a huge site so we only covered a small fraction of it.
A few of the group also saw Redstart but I didn't manage to get onto one.

I'm enjoying birding in my home village. Today I saw 2 Raven & 3 Firecrest. From the hill on Mann's Farm I can see across to the blocks of flats in Coley (first photo) over the Kennet valley. Between me and the flats lies the M4, the River Kennet, and the Holybrook.
