Tough but somebody has to do it but obviously it is not Weir Wood!

More BTO Autumn News: bird olfactory senses better than one might think and if you have wondered how sexually monomorphic birds avoid embarrassing mating attempts an explanation that it is through a good exploratory sniff…

First I have seen this Autumn so hopefully you will see them soon in your area too.

Another from the forest floor at #RSPBBroadwaterWarren from my walk there yesterday (9/10/25): White Saddle (Helvella crispa). Perhaps it looks like a saddle for elves??

Beautiful day at #RSPBBroadwaterWarren today. My first Crossbill there this year, calling and eventually briefly located to the top of a Pine. Also: Buzzard; Chiffchaff; Goldcrest; Great Spotted & Green WP; Nuthatch; Stonechat (3 - 2 flycatching); Woodlark (singing)

I hope you did find a bit of hope - it is a bit in short supply
mayfieldbirder.bsky.social
Possibly, but pale and solitary? I have been puzzling over masses of similar fungi that have suddenly appeared all over our wood.

Not bad for a bird that is about the same weight as a 20p coin.

...also on the ringing front: we've received notification of a fantastic recovery of a Firecrest ringed here last October that was controlled a few days ago by a ringer in the Czech Republic - the first movement of a UK-ringed Firecrest to the Czech Republic or indeed to anywhere in central Europe

From a recent walk to the east of our High Weald village. A Boletes in an Ancient Wood and I thought ‘an odd looking Cep (or Penny Bun, or Porcini)’ being pale and at an odd angle, taking a quick photo before being intrigued by the next.

Arachnophobias look away now: reading the wildlife reports in my August @britishwildlife.bsky.social I learnt that the British list now has 680 species (so not just Daddy Long-legs and the few I can identify then).
mayfieldbirder.bsky.social
Meripilus giganteus along our High Weald lane and the Giant Polypore here occurs close to the Giant Puffball in a section where some Beech line the lane. I just need Giant Club here to complete the set!

Just catching up with the August @britishwildlife.bsky.social and read that off the coast of neighbouring Cornwall 2 Iberian Orca were reported and these cetaceans are know to eat Atlantic Bluefin Tuna - was that why they were in British waters?
mayfieldbirder.bsky.social
Excited to see 5 Atlantic Bluefin Tuna gambolling in the sea at #StartPoint on 16/9, first time I have seen them! Native to British waters and subject to ‘world renowned’ recreational fishing in the 1930s but disappeared in the 1990s (hmm). Tricky to photo though but note seabird size comparison!

Apart from dealing with a Stormy Amy felled Ash blocking one of the gates to the wood I haven’t entered for a few days but just have and the fungi that had been very pale and I hoped were not Honey Fungus are now the yellow-brown colour I associate with that species.
mayfieldbirder.bsky.social
Hmm, that was my first thought but the wood is absolutely covered with them, they are much paler than Honey Fungi that I have seen elsewhere and I didn’t find any bootlaces - however I definitely bow to your better knowledge.
mayfieldbirder.bsky.social
I find an occasional troop of Funnel (always Trooping) but this year a riot of Clouded Funnel in our section of Wealden Ancient Wood.

Such feisty butterflies - saw a few of these in one of the few sheltered spots on Beachy Head on Saturday.

A late morning High Weald walk last week and just in time to see the Egg-yolk Fungus or Cow-Pat Mushroom or Sunny Side Up or Yellow Fieldcap or Bolbitius titubans as they age fast but readily identifiable.
