From Sunday’s @sussexornitholo.bsky.social walk at #CissburyRing : a posing female Kestrel, Falco tinnunculus, a species found in 50% of Sussex tetrads, and a non-posing Yellowhammer, Emberiza citrinella, found in 33% (Sussex Bird Report 2023).

Some birds on WeBS count between Rye and Camber: 1 Spoonbill, 47 Brent Geese, 183 Golden Plover, 97 Lapwing, 68 Curlew, 32 Dunlin, 74 Redshank, 1 Bar-tailed Godwit, 3 Great White Egret, 2 Kingfisher. Also 100s of Goldfinch.

Great work from the Sussex Barn Owl team who monitored over 200 boxes. Although numbers were down on last year by about 10%.

Another visit to the Scotney BBS which was showing rather well this morning, I didn't arrive till 11.00 and not another person till young Jack arrived around midday🤷‍♂️ A super smart little bird!

Siskins over again today plus a Woodlark and plenty of Mipits & hirundines. Pair of Garganey on the marsh, 94 cattle egrets at marsh farm, 19 curlew sandpipers & 6 spoonbills from norton benches, another 5 curlew sands on east side, 3 spot shanks at ferry, 5 whinchat ham/ferry, 3 Green Sands Ferry.

Spent a day at Pagham Harbour today watching the tide rise and fall and the birds come and go. Total of 50 species of birds seen/heard including this Spoonbill at a high tide roost with the egrets and herons @sussexornitholo.bsky.social

A moulting adult Great White Egret showing its bulging neck and very long legs.
They are now a regular sighting in the area and must surely breed here in the next few years.

Said our farewells to conservation and birding legend Tony Marr. Founder of the @sussexornitholo.bsky.social Council member of @rspb.bsky.social and key figure in the BOU. He was also the driving force behind the succesful campaign to protect Pagham and Rye Harbour as nature reserves. RIP
