I found my very expensive CS 101 textbook in a bookstore in Shanghai for only a couple of dollars. (It was one of several times in my life when I was radicalized.)
Traditional textbooks are notoriously expensive (thank you, academic publishing). Many academic libraries do not buy them for a variety of reasons. Those that do buy them generally put pretty strict constraints on who can access them and for how long.
