Exactly the point I was making last night. And here’s the thing: we didn’t all say things like that in the 70s and 80s. The reason I know is because I was one of the ones who did - to my lasting shame - and I did it for the shock value, to get attention. Because most people didn’t say racist things.
Many people on socmed responding to the Farage racism story with ‘We all said things like that in the 70s’. If you did, you’re one of those who made my childhood miserable much of the time. And if you have no remorse, face facts: you’re (still) a racist.

Good to hear the Chancellor identify the legacy of Brexit as one of the reasons our economy needs investment - the damage it has done is stark.

To offer any chance of salvaging British businesses and jobs affected, this budget shows we need to go further in the EU reset

I haven't seen any yet but you could probably find a few contemporaries who didn't personally witness Farage being Farage at school. But there doesn't seem to be a single former pupil or teacher who find the descriptions of racism, anti-semitism & cruelty unfeasible. Shocked, I tell you...

Getting UK back in EU needs:

🇬🇧🇪🇺 Vision
🇬🇧🇪🇺 Political will
🇬🇧 Courage to face down Farage's posturing
🇬🇧 Patience - won't be quick
🇬🇧 Persuasion and negotiating skill - many in EU will be UK sceptic
🇪🇺 A leap of faith

But there is no alternative for 🇬🇧. And it's ultimately in 🇪🇺 interest.

So I’ve hesitated to share this but I will. When I was a schoolboy, I said cruel, hurtful, racist things to fellow pupils. By the time I reached sixth form I had matured enough to feel remorse and I apologised to them; they didn’t all accept the apology which is fair enough. 1/2

The BBC makes itself *extremely* hard to love with this stuff. I’ve worked in more than one small newsroom that’s discovered to its immense frustration that the country’s biggest news org has stolen its work with no credit whatsoever.
I guess it’s a compliment that the top story on BBC London’s TV/online output today is a direct lift of a month-old London Centric story? But once again the BBC is consistently the worst news outlet for actually remembering to credit others.

But, most exciting of all, it’s 110 years since General Sir Eyre Coote faced a charge of improper and indecent conduct after paying schoolboys to allow him to flog them, and then getting them to flog him. And he might have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn’t been for that pesky nurse...
