A trick i consistently see hard science folks do is hide behind math to shield themselves from gaps of understanding.

You see a lot of researchers who barely grasp statistics but infer that a complex equation signals their competency
There's a signaling theory that I more or less buy that says academics are constantly trying to signal intelligence. In "hard" sciences, this is easy to do, because there's lots of math and everyone agrees it's very difficult. In social science, you have to be confusing to appear smart.

Its very telling how testosterone therapy is promo’d as invigorating/aspirational without listing any downsides. It increases your risk of stroke and heart attack!

Thats not a casual side effect, especially in the older populations that get advertised it as a miracle therapy

My roommates threw a cast party without advanced notice, so i was baking when they called me about it. Right before people arrived, i put three loaves of braided pulla bread in the oven.

Everyone lost their minds when i pulled them out

I was so pleased JC brought me in on this project.
If you write or are a journalist or do any kind of storytelling (science or not) I highly recommend checking this out. There is so much in the about mechanics and risk/benefits of how you connect to audiences.
We’ve now produced a toolkit to guide science communicators through (critically) using certain strategies. It has been beautifully illustrated by @jordancollver.bsky.social (in collab with @rikworth.bsky.social) and can be downloaded as a PDF here:

Deal still going!
I don’t usually share Black Friday deals because I’m not a yankee capitalist slave to Mammon but, Hocus Pocus is going cheap and I think it’s both A) normally a touch too expensive and B) occasionally needs a push since you can’t get it in bookshops.

the official abbreviation format for the journal of analytical chemistry is “Anal. Chem.”

I….uhhh. Spelled out the full title on all my ppts in lieu of brevity
Science PSA: Never abbreviate “analysis” as “anal”. Ever.

I would also add:

Being able to learn/do something despite your disinterest is a good skill to have. Its also a skill that you train, not a trait that you summon whenever convenient
We can teach people things that they aren't ever going to have any use for later in life! That's an okay thing to do!

Hello! today is 🎂🎉MY BIRTHDAY! 🎉🎂

For my birthday, plz read what is up of my webcomic/signal-boost this skeet? It would mean a lot to me!

Only 50 pages so far. It hasn't updated in ages, but I'm still working on it. Updates will resume when the backlog reaches 50 pages.

Me: Alexa, volume up.

Alexa (full throated): You got Wordle in 2 and came 7th in Apex Legends in September 2021. Would you like me to read your ex’s FB posts?

Me: oh yeah!

Alexa (quietly): FFS, waste of skin.

No idea what the inner workings of HR are but seeing a lot of scientist job applications get removed and swapped with intern, postdoc, or BS/MS-level alternates.

Must be a sign of a healthy tech economy!

Low expectations and a list of approved/suggested sources did not help. Some ignored all that and just copy+pasted google AI summaries
