n(e)w: "VHS Halloween"

It's that time of year again, to be mildly disappointed by three segments, pleasantly surprised by one, and a fervent advocate for the fifth.

This is the funniest movie of the year. Every time I think it runs out of steam it comes at it from another brilliant angle.

Wouldn’t be surprised if “not condoning it, it’s just what happened” became a meme.

You should add alt-text to your images moving forward!

Oh hell yes, “Noroi” got me good this year. And those dreams in “Prince,” ugh.

“Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” “Halloween,” “The Haunting,” “Rec,” “The Invitation,” and That Shot from “Lake Mungo.”

What’s the scariest horror movie you’ve ever seen?

On a positive note, I think Woke 2 is going to hit at the same time as “there’s actually more to life than ‘getting the bag.’”

“I spent three nights and three days in federal custody. During that time, I was never told what I was charged with, was not allowed to shower despite being covered in tear gas and pepper spray, had no phone call to my family, and no access to an attorney.” - George Retes, U.S. citizen and veteran.
I’m a US citizen and a veteran. ICE arrested me for no reason.
Jailed for three days without an explanation or ability to notify anyone, George Retes argues the only path to healing starts with the government taking accountability for its actions.

Yeah, I have affection for a few but the first two are just on a different level.

Rewatched NEXT OF KIN (‘82) and I already really liked it but now I kind of love it. The way the film flows freely between different genres of horror in an incredibly slow burn before pulling the trigger and going wildly intense for its reveal is something that should be studied. #filmsky

As though there isn’t a rich history of “Tron” films with muted critical reactions.

It’s cool how in the first two movies she doesn’t have a Character Flaw to overcome or anything like that. She has a problem that tests her competency and resilience, and because we believe she is struggling (because Weaver is superb at communicating her interiority), we cheer her along.

I find it a big improvement in B&W, smoothes over the VFX and adds a “Night of the Living Dead” / Bert I. Gordon scruffiness to the whole thing.

(“Carrie” still my favorite too, good call.)

My memory is “The Serpent and the Rainbow,” but “People Under the Stairs” and “Red Eye” are the alternates. Haven’t seen all his stuff, though.

I need to re-read “The Shining,” I genuinely do not remember the book being particularly kind to Jack Torrance. Maybe I’m forgetting stuff. My memory is it opens with him being a POS and ends with him hammering away the last of himself as he gives in to the “spirits.”

This one hurts a lot. RIP Diane Keaton.

I don’t even know what else to say.
Diane Keaton in THE GODFATHER. Diane Keaton in SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE. Diane Keaton in REDS. Diane Keaton in BABY BOOM.
