To wrap your head around this, you have to realize that THE SUN is constantly sending Earth a *massive* amount of energy.

That energy could easily power our world. Instead it's cooking us under the pollution from burning fossil fuels — a vastly smaller, dirtier, and more expensive energy source.
In a newly published paper, we find that in 2025 human emissions of greenhouse gases added around 23 billion trillion joules of heat to the world's oceans – 39 times as much as the annual energy produced by all human activity on Earth. link.springer.com/ar...

Notes to The Resistance: During an Autocracy, All of Us Are Queer
On June 28, 1969, LGBTQ+ New Yorkers at the Stonewall Inn forever changed America: they rioted for their life because they were tired of police kicking the shit out of them.

Like a decade ago OKCupid released a paper about users “beliefs” and basically concluded that 25-30% of America is hardcore fascistic. I think about this all the time.
New poll finds that 28% of US adults believe the force used by the ICE agent in Minneapolis was justified.

since it's behind a paywall now, I wanted to share this graph from "How Trump 2.0 is slashing NIH-backed research — in charts" (Nature, April 2025). Say it with me: the anti-trans/LGBTQ+ movement is an anti-science movement:

André, whose newsletter you should subscribe to, showed up for 2026 with a flamethrower.

Pointed out weeks ago that a reported power struggle last spring saw NWSL's sporting director & head of marketing both depart. The chatter focused on the marketing vacuum, & it drove me quietly bonkers..

The end goal of Grok sexual harassment is to make women afraid to be visible. It’s a punishment for daring to exist in a way the perpetrators can’t control. There’s no one solution to this, because the problem isn’t just technological. It’s cultural. It’s misogyny. This is just one expression of it.

New result: you can build a universal computer using a single billiard ball on a carefully crafted table!

More precisely: you can create a computer that can run any program, using just a single point moving frictionlessly in a region of the plane and bouncing off the walls elastically.

It is not that generative AI is intrinsically bad, it’s only that this specific moment in the trajectory of international liberal democracy has consolidated it as an incontestable tool of a new monied illiberal Internationale that seeks to remake society in order to maximize the return on capital.

I've written a lot about the abandoned well crisis in this country. It's an environmental and climate disaster but also a financial disaster. This new article notes the financial reality about why nothing is done.
