This is the theological equivalent of insisting that a caveman banging a couple rocks together is the only REAL music, and a symphony orchestra or a jazz quintet some kind of diluted shadow.

maybe the defining thing of fundamentalism (inclusive of fundamentalist atheists) is treating religions and creeds and faiths as set-in-stone things that you can depart from, or fall away from. A refusal to contemplate a faith community as living and adapting to the questions of its age.

As always, if your position is that “only the literalists and reactionaries are the true form of a faith or religion” you ARE espousing fundamentalism
This is really an instance of a very longstanding trend where secular pundits end up unwittingly aligned with fundamentalists in treating the crudest and most extreme version of any faith as the genuine article and everything else as somehow inauthentic.
Trump's attempt to crush a religious uprising might be obvious if the press corps treated everyone’s faith as equally authentic, hence equally legitimate. It doesn’t.

And here's a secret of the past decade: a lot of the crucial organizing/resistance work is done by women who look like nice mom-type ladies, often suburban variety, sometimes through nice organizations like churches. Sorry if anyone needs it to look like Che Guevara.

Actually a whole lot of stuff going back to the environmental justice movements and back further to the abolitionists is nice ladies. It's kind of nice ladies all the way down. (Not all ladies are nice, not all nice people are ladies; insert 4000-word qualifier here.)

It's the Bluesky equivalent of those right wing tough guys all rushing to say how scared they are of going to literally any urban downtown
weird to me that there's a whole class of people on here who will see this and immediately run to their keyboards to announce that it would terrify them, personally, out of voting. have some self respect

you personally have the ability to secure elections for yourself and your neighbors.

as i keep saying, the things to do to secure elections are to volunteer to work the polls or to serve as an observer, & to pressure your *state representatives* to take steps to further secure voting locations and ballots. you should also learn about how election administration works in your area.

there will not be “swing states” in november. there will be, depending on national conditions, anywhere from 25 to 75 competitive House races. they will be in states led by republicans and democrats, and the key voters will likely be people who swing between the parties.

one thing i have noticed is a lot of folks do not seem to understand the difference between a presidential election and 435+ legislative elections. i have seen any number of people say that you could subvert the outcome this november by targeting “swing states,” which does not make any sense.

I said, “finding higher quality candidates to run for local office might help”

He reacted with a bunch of reasons that’s not going to happen

if you can’t recruit a candidate you aren’t surviving a revolution, sorry

“burn the entire democracy down and start over” is an opinion equivalent to “apocalyptic times are good because the rapture is coming and I’ll go to heaven” in that it’s a way people give themselves permission to do none of the complex and difficult things that would make things a little better now

This is a gentle way of saying 'the entire worldview of the Trumpist regime is that every white American is a slavering monster who longs to bathe in the blood of his (gendered language intentional) neighbors' and they appear to have been totally incapable of considering: what if that's not true
Forget all the nonsense about Trump “pivoting” to moderation. The regime will continue to escalate.

But the thing is: In Minneapolis, people are holding the line. And the Trumpists have no effective strategy to consolidate authoritarian rule in the face of sustained resistance.

What is happening in Minneapolis stands in contrast to the idea of Trumpism’s irresistible power.

It should be a reminder: Being lawless, immoral, and violent does not make the Trumpists omnipotent. Obscuring that distinction is an act of defeatism that only serves the regime.

Finally, the regime has no conception of exerting power beyond brutal force. That is why they’ll continue to escalate. It’s extremely dangerous. But this kind of violent spectacle is simply not an effective strategy of consolidating authoritarian rule against majority opinion in a massive country.

Extremists like Stephen Miller simply cannot fathom that there is an authentic resistance fueled by a sincere rejection of the MAGA project. The idea that white people would act in solidarity with their non-white neighbors is beyond what the Trumpists can imagine. They don’t understand it.
