Both of my kids have had school assignments, in high school and in college, in which they're asked to talk to someone who was alive/adult when x, y, z event happened and get their take on the event in question. I don't remember having such assignments in my day, but woof, it makes me feel old.

Cowardice from the BBC. Donald Trump is in fact almost cartoonishly corrupt: he sells pardons, accepts gold bars, and sells his own cryptocurrency and souvenirs. There is surely no more bribe-able head of state on the planet.
I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

"Deliberately being a provocative asshole at someone you suspect is trolling or fake" is a very useful tactic sometimes, though, because their response is often very informative. I save it for the cases where I'm already pretty sure, though!

The CEO got extremely snippy when asked about trust and safety concerns, did not seem to have anticipated they would even come up, and settled on a combination of evasion and sarcastic pushback rather than answering.

Obviously Hegseth wants to go back to the days of Lord Baden-Powell, cold showers, tirades against the evils of masturbation, and compulsory Olde English public school buggery for all. I mean, that is *totally* his vibe.

He's so obliviously homophobic and macho he's in danger of outing himself.

Here I am, painstakingly planning the changes for the submission draft of a novel in progress, when my Muse barges into the office and VOMITS the opening of a new and unscheduled sequel into my lap.

(And there's another novel, not to mention a novella, in the queue first!)

Yes, the Renaissance (& many eras) are full of examples of the pattern that the very rich try to turn wealth into power. If the system won’t let them, they’ll break the system to do it. Contrast the instability of Genoa (no new families could join the elite) with Venice (the 0.01% could be voted in)
In which TPM reminds me of @adapalmer.bsky.social's Reinventing the Renaissance

"But it’s also an effort by those who have had a vast run-up in wealth over the last quarter century wanting to use that wealth to lock in that wealth by the acquisition of direct political power."
