Think about how all of this would not be happening if Reconstruction hadn't completely fizzled out in a decade.

Had they hanged confederates instead of giving them blanket amnesty in 1872.

1872, a mere 7 years after the war, the 14th amendment was killed.

If Democrats aren’t whipping votes against ICE funding, and letting conservative members vote to pass it, it means the Democratic Party supports ICE funding.

If your opposition to fascism is performative, then you don’t actually oppose fascism.
Jeffries Won’t Whip Vote Against ICE Funding - The American Prospect
While the House Democratic leader announced personal opposition to a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security, he won’t pressure his colleagues to do the same.

NEWS: While Hakeem Jeffries has announced he's opposing the DHS/ICE funding bill tomorrow, his team is not whipping the vote. Several frontliners are expected to vote yes. There's a difference in leadership between personal vote decisions & unifying the caucus.

Americans, seeing fascism, will call it literally anything else: communism, anarchism, Maoism, Stalinism, etc.

Like their eyes just glaze right past it, it doesn't process.

And even if they do actually notice the fascism, they don't notice its basis in centuries of domestic homegrown tradition.

Widely accepted by who motherfucker? Arbitrarily redefining everything through reactionary framing made everyone fucking incoherent - just because some chuds brains melted from podcast vibes doesn’t mean you get to throw out existing definitions!
it’s just so crazy to see it happen in real time

One thing I'd like to see from the Democratic Party is an explicit attempt to build the sort of transnational solidarity between parties of liberal democracy that exists between parties of the nationalist far right.

2nd July 1863. Battle of Gettysburg. For perhaps the only time in the entire war the Confederates seem to be winning.

Dan Sickles, commander III Corps, is ordered hold on Cemetery Ridge. For reasons unknown he advances. Broken, his men begin to flee.

This is the moment on which the war depends /1

look he's seen the polling, this is not a statement about what's effective, it's a statement about what they want to be committed to doing with power should they win. if they run on opposing ICE then they'll have to actually oppose ICE. this is ideology masquerading as electoral strategy
NEW: In this interview, Chuck Schumer describes the "five buckets" Dems think are key to their possibly winning a Senate majority in 2026: housing, "the high price of food [and] food monopolies playing a major role there," electricity, "the high cost of childcare," and health care.
Zero Chucks Left to Give
Chuck Schumer now sees a path back to the majority. Can he manage his way through it?

This is exactly right. The white kids and adults I know who know the true history of the United States and Colonialism don't feel bad or guilty; they feel angry, in community with their peers of other races, and empowered to push for change. Enlightened white people are dangerous to the hegemony.
This is my song. “Those are the real stakes — not white children feeling guilty, but white children armed with truth, history and a righteous desire to work with others to change the world.”

Considering material conditions inside a shared reality = pedantic.

Navel gazing on the subjective drama of who’s more worthy of empathy = real shit.
It is not "pedantic" to acknowledge that a college protest against Iran makes zero sense. Protests are typically against things, not in favor of rights movements in other countries!

Bouie is right that Trump neither has state capacity or strategic skill to stop the mid-term elections. But there is a pretty high risk of a potentially violent confrontation between legislative and executive branches of the US system if Trump claims fraud after mid-terms

posted a video on the “canceled election” stuff on my youtube and it is unbelievable how many people on the ostensible left believe that trump is an all-powerful god king whose words shape reality. “buh buh but what if he says the election is fraud?” okay. he says the election is fraud. and?

By his logic, someone out there - I’m sure thousands would eagerly sign up - could challenge him to a one v one fight and absolutely beat his ass to a bloody pulp and just take his shit. Real “no not like that” moment I’m sure.

When sitting Governors and a Mayors talk about what the federal government is doing, that's of course a felony.

But when the outgoing President conspires for weeks to overturn an election he lost then tells a crowd to storm the Capitol, that's of course a sacred and protected "official act."

The very dutiful transcription of the fact that DOJ is launching an investigation into Walz and Frey doesn't exhibit the least critical thinking about what the crime was.

CBS at least names it but ... think about this, folks.

The claim that Dems embraced “abolish the police” in 2018 and 2020 is entirely made up. Name a single Dem rep who was saying it - it’s a right wing narrative that conflates people on social media with the party itself, something the GOP always gets the benefit of the doubt on!
"This whole debate is really interesting because it just underscores the fact that Democrats are still really unsure how to talk about immigration....they don't trust their own instincts."
