The Border Patrol agent who shot Marimar Martinez and joked about putting seven bullet holes in her in text messages is a 23-year-veteran of Border Patrol.

Before Maine, Charles Exum was stationed at Alamogordo, New Mexico, where he won a nationwide police shooting contest.

The 2025 shootings of Minnesota legislators were treated far too lightly. Media and the public moved on too fast without grasping the seriousness of assassination. These are life and death issues, not just differences of opinion the USA is working out. The reactionary right is ready to kill.

Because many people on here are talking about making demands, it might be worth thinking about the goal. Body cameras, unmasking, and making it easier to sue will not reduce the number of people arrested and condemned to jail to die, suffer and/or be deported.

This isn't about "training issues." The murderer who executed Renee Good has been with ICE for 10 years, and according to DHS, the murderer who executed Alex Pretti has been there for 8 years.

These aren't "new recruits," or officers that can be "retrained." ICE can't be reformed. Abolish ICE.

Such a hilarious party. Not sure what more can be said about an establishment that watches its base come out and get killed to stand against an agency and administration, and their ultimate plan is more of the same but with body cams.
Dems coalescing around 5 restrictions on ICE, I'm told:

DHS required to cooperate with state probes (big)
CBP stays at border
warrants for arrests
IDs, bodycams
ICE out of churches, schools

"That package unites a lot of Dems," Sen Chris Murphy tells me on the pod:

It is hard to grasp but large masses of Americans are both racist/xenophobic AND not racist/xenophobic enough to applaud what Trump is doing. It's goldilocks shit, they want a level of racism/xenophobia calibrated exactly to their personal preferences, and you just can't make that policy. Don't try.

it's also unbelievably fucking rich that even as the nation is largely (and largely violently) controlled by far-right fascists, we are still urged, with much scolding and pursing of lips, to expand our ideological bubbles and really 🎀 𝓁𝒾𝓈𝓉𝑒𝓃 🎀 to what the nazis are saying.

Some liberals are INSISTENT that there are a bunch of Proud Boys in ICE. Why do folks have to believe this? Because they believe in the bad apples explanation for why ICE operates as it does. It's self-soothing and a fairytale.

Black folks and immigrants have long lived in a "perogative state" when it comes to law enforcement, and maybe pundits at the largest national outlets should recognize that their past support for punitive policing and immigration enforcement laid the groundwork for the current moment.
