Bovino’s rant fits the authoritarian indicators in our assessment: empowered security forces acting with impunity, militarized immigration raids, executive overreach through federalized enforcement, and loyalty-driven ops unmoored from oversight. His tone isn’t an outlier but a symptom.

Piercing analysis from @tompepinsky.com on the US in the Asia Pacific: "They must prepare for a future in which the United States cannot lead, regardless of who is in power." In a forthcoming @iojournal.bsky.social piece, @sdhyde.bsky.social & I conclude the same for US global leadership generally.
Want to read what I really think about the Trump administration and the Asia Pacific? Here you go. It’s a goddamn catastrophe for U.S. national interests and for the regional economic and diplomatic order.
A United States that is disintegrating and no longer a leader in Asia

Absolutely shocking that the Chinese govt pressured a UK university to shut down research about forced labour in Xinjiang and the links to global supply chains. The work of Laura Murphy and her team had been instrumental in getting Chinese companies sanctioned.

Someone needs to draft a Project 2029 agenda item of defunding anti-democratic government contractors. Trump would do it out of pure spite, but my guess there is a strong efficiency argument to reduce rent-seeking.

Strongmen can't control large amounts of people. They only condition them to believe they have fewer options.

Condition them against their own freedom.

Propaganda makes you complicit in your own imprisonment.

A participant in your own oppression.

Trump II was already, even before this, the biggest systematic assault by an administration on First Amendment rights since at least World War I, easily surpassing the 50s Red Scare, and the only plausible rival for going after mainstream political opposition would be the Alien & Sedition Acts.

Armed troops in US streets? For many, Trump makes that seem normal.
