Trump just want some kind of peace deal, so he can claim he deserves the Nobel peace prize. Oh, that and the Russian bribes of course.
Putin and Trump agreed to end the war in Ukraine after the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas, during talks in Alaska in August 2025 - Reuters.

In other words, Trump agreed to sell Ukraine off to Russia, but Ukraine refuses to comply, and that’s why he hates us.

Here is a key part of President's Zelensky's address in Davos yesterday. What he says outwardly and implicitly is key. Trump actually hates Europe today, will not change, Europe needs to accept that and look after itself.
Bravo!

Ha ha ha! Classic Trump finesse. I am sure Trump’s Board of Peace will make lots of bigly peace around the world.

Man, he wants that Nobel Peace Prize so desperately.
Trump’s Board of Peace logo is basically the UN logo, except dipped in gold and edited so the world only includes America.

The last few days have provided Europeans with an important lesson on how to handle Trump. Don't beg, don't bluster, but do use the leverage you have to impose costs of him for his reckless behavior. European Greenland actions should inform their Ukraine policy. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Is there anybody who still thinks that USA will be there for us if we need them as long as Trump is the president?
Trump confuses Greenland with Iceland, again. Says he wants "a piece of ice, cold and poorly located...it's a very small ask compared to what we have given them for many decades. The problem is NATO that we'll be there for them 100% but I'm not sure they'll be there for us."

The power outages and freezing conditions in Ukraine right now are insane. Greenland news and war “coverage fatigue” not giving it the presence in headlines it deserves. The humanitarian impact is absolutely staggering.

The Trump disbelief that the Norwegian govt doesn't control the Nobel process is deeply indicative of his thinking. He can't conceive that an institution could (or should) be genuinely independent of coercion or political power. That's the change he represents.
Trump: "I should have gotten the Nobel prize for each war...I saved millions and millions of people...and don't let anyone tell you that Norway doesn't control the shots. It's in Norway. Norway controls the shots. It's a joke. They've lost such prestige.“

Can we speak the truth on this? Trump has been "unable to end the war" because he has failed to bully and threaten Ukraine into accepting a deal that would make Putin happy.
⚡️Trump blames Ukraine war negotiations deadlock on Moscow, Kyiv failing to align on talks.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Jan. 20 that he has been unable to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, claiming that neither side is consistently willing to agree to a deal at the same time.

"Daddy" strategy was probably the worst diplomatic blunders of the past 70 years.

It inflated Trump ego further and validated his self-image as a strongman surrounded by losers who have no say in the affairs of the strongman.

Instead of building a relationship, Europe turned itself into submission

It might sound silly, but I mean it: The easiest and most potent way for Europe to hurt Trump this year is to once again use its cultural soft power and to threaten a boycott of the World Cup. It would become a completely meaningless event and would hurt him where he is most vulnerable - his vanity.

One thing that now even the most hopeful have to admit, is that the unctuous European tactic of flattering, praising, massaging Trump has been a catastrophic failure and made things worse.

A key point here in an excellent thread by @maxbergmann.bsky.social:

Continuing with the grovelling strategy, distasteful to the European publics from the start, would likely have a domestic political cost to European leaders. It’s time for a strong response now. Enough is enough.
Trump tariffing countries over Greenland is a test. If Europe just swallows it and tries to move on, it increases the odds of the WH thinking it can seize Greenland without consequences. Europe therefore has to respond.

Euro publics have had enough and want their leaders to push back 2/

In sum, Europe has little to lose in hitting back hard. The hope here is Europe hits back hard and prompts Trump to deescalate, just as he has done on China. Thus by escalating Europe is also creating a pathway to deescalate this crisis.

Bingo! This has been obvious for a long time. Trump places no value on NATO so he has zero problems with using a negotiation tactic where he puts NATO on the line.
What European leaders have been most nervous about is the US pulling back on NATO or Ukraine… but how can Europe trust the US will come to its defense if its trying to seize territory from a NATO country. They can’t. So why cave to keep a security commitment that is not real. 6/

[6/6] Many of these would carry costs for Europe (to varying degrees explored in the paper). But showing its willingness to use its cards is Europe's best hope of deterring Trump. The impression of helplessness seems only to encourage him - and store up a yet-bigger showdown for the future.

Yes and no. Greenland is a pointless problem of our own making if we still consider the transatlantic alliance as intact. But it is not a crisis made by Europe—and Europe is the only player in this that actually considers the Ukraine war a problem. Trump is fine with giving Putin a helping hand.
It reminds me a bit of Brexit: we now spend so much time and effort solving a problem that is unnecessary and self-made - while there is an actual war going on on our continent.
