We get so frustrated with stunted adults who spent their entire childhood being punished for thinking critically. It sucks for everybody.

I went to the vigil for Alex Pretti at the VA headquarters in DC last night. Despite the sad occasion, I was comforted to see hundreds of people (from different agencies and non-feds too) mourn our loss, remember others killed by ICE, and call for action against ICE and CBP.

ICE & CBP have been out kidnapping people in Los Angeles every day since June. The media has moved on and acts like this isn’t still happening. The crises are ongoing. Solidarity with the people fighting back in Minneapolis and everywhere.
please remember that no matter how many “ICE is losing in MN” articles you read today, there is still a very real, urgent, ongoing crisis in Minnesota.

people need food and they need rent money. that has not changed.

still in LA, doing the bullshit
The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

One of the things Maria Ressa implored us to do what stop using the term “misinformation.”

When people in power lie, it’s not a mistake. They are active participants in seeding and amplifying that lie to maintain their power over the narrative.

That’s disinformation.
Had the incredible opportunity yesterday to hear Nobel Laureate @mariaressa.bsky.social speak about journalism’s role in fighting fascism.

She talked about the work her company The Nerve does to map disinformation networks and show how they work to shift narratives.

This slide sums up that work.

ICE took the flower man in Echo Park 40 minutes ago. He’s at this corner every day. I’ve bought flowers from the man and woman here for anniversaries and birthdays. Lemmy loves to smell them whenever we walk by in the mornings. I was just at the street corner 15 minutes before it happened. Fuck.

This is Minneapolis.

Literally every corner along Lake St. packed with people holding candles, many singing, honoring a person who by all accounts was an absolute gem of a human, whose life was tragically stolen by a fascist, paramilitary occupation force.

What a stark, horrifying demonstration of the tension a union opens itself to when it organizes security forces.

If you hesitate to condemn the killing of a member, for fear of alienating the members who fired the guns, what sort of cage have you built around your union?
My god.

Statement from AFGE: Alex was a member. His killer may have been as well.

Alex Pretti was a colleague at the VA. We hired him to recruit for our trial. He became an ICU nurse- I lover working with him. He was a good kind person who lived to help and these fuckers executed him.

White. Hot. Rage.

We deal with this a lot in our civil rights work against the vast system of pretrial detention. Decades of mass incarceration has left our culture desensitized. We have stopped realizing a core pillar of a reasonable society: the state must have very good reasons for putting a human in a cage.
