The book club scam has taken an exciting new leap forward. I got one today from a "curated literary platform and newsletter" that, unusually, offered a link to its website. I'm in edits, so obviously I took the opportunity to procrastinate. /1

Hideous licensing agreement from Red Ogre Review, but what really jumps out at me is the moral rights waiver
Red Ogre (@ogre.red) gets rights to your work upon *submission*.

And those rights are ridiculous. They can change your work, not credit you, use your work for advertising, or put it in an anthology.

Don't submit to this one, folks.

Let me repeat that. IT SNOWED. Why is this so groundbreakingly weird? Because I live just north of Orlando. This is where people go to vacation AWAY from snow. It is not supposed to snow here! And yet, we had two nights of below freezing weather (in the 20s, with windchills between 8 and 11 degrees). We set our outdoor taps to drip into buckets overnight so they wouldn't freeze, and woke up to frozen solid buckets. It's COLD. And next week, it will be near 90. I never thought I'd say this, but I'm getting tired of weird.

Happy Deductible Reset January to those who (don't) celebrate it!

Poor @totallydonna.kitrocha.com has one (1) biologic that costs $3,800. We are trying to scrounge up money to pay for it!

That means 20% off sale in the shop! (even on new things!)

So I suppose this is my way of saying that the blog and newsletter are going to be a little... unhinged for a bit. Because I'm not even sure if I should, so what do I say? I'm fine. We're all fine. It's all fine up here. How are you? What I'm up to right now?

I get accused of black and white thinking, and I try to see other points of view, but at the heart of things I keep coming back to this:

Either you believe that humans have inherent worth and dignity, or you don't, and you either do your best to act in accordance with those beliefs, or you don't.

This set of observations is produced by my scrolling Reddit and otherwise listening to people talk about "how to write."

A) there is no requirement that any of your characters has any sort of "arc" let alone a redemption.

B) there is also no requirement that your fiction has a plot.

USPS quietly changed its postmark rules — mail is no longer dated when you drop it off. The “official” date is when it hits automated sorting — sometimes days later

Which could have major implications for mail in voting — it’s a clever way to disenfranchise voters that’s going largely overlooked

This is generally not true.

So I am going to say something about romance as a genre.

A lot of people think that romance is ignorable because <insert thing they think about romance> and romance authors don't count because <insert thing they think about romance>.

This thread is not about whether you have to like romance.

Wildly different things, tasks, techniques, subspecialties being lumped into "AI" and then being conflated with each other, doesn't help. Different types of models vs the techniques to train them vs the tasks they are supposed to accomplish, all under "AI".
