he settles it forever: "retro" refers to a specific time period which was defined in the ps3 era. the bar for what is considered "retro" does not move forward as time passes. it's comparable to "modernist" literature, the name being temporal doesn't mean it changes over time, it's just a name.

unironically i would say ps2 is the cutoff because i distinctly remember, at the time, people referring to the ps1 as retro, but of course the ps2 was recent so it wasn't retro. so like yeah basically 9/11.

this makes metal gear solid 2, a game whose development had to be altered because 9/11 happened too close to its launch and they had to change some elements to not look like a reference to that, the First Non-Retro Game
