There’s a very surreal conversation I keep having on here where people seem unable to hold two ideas at the same time, and I’m not sure why. It’s simply true that the Big AI platforms like ChatGPT are:
1. Extremely bad for society, in many ways.
2. Very genuinely popular with lots of people.

I'll give you just one concrete example:
OpenAI claims it is on track for $20 billion in annual revenue this year. They also claim 800 million weekly users. 700 Wh at 13¢ per kWh, assuming those users send one prompt per day: comes out to $24.5 billion in electricity use.

Here's some additional calculations and framing to put the churning liters of water per single claim in perspective: If the companies are lying - about 0.3 Wh or so per prompt and it's actually 700 Wh, then their profit margin on $20/month plans would be wiped out in less than 300 prompts.
Ok I'm getting annoyed of well-meaning but half-measured critique on AI in my feed. Literacy, critical thinking, and data center real estate are fair and *real* points. However, A LLM generating a 100 word email isn't boiling any cups of water let alone liters.
Out of curiosity I decided to try and run the numbers on how much Netflix you can watch for the energy cost of a ChatGPT prompt

As far as I can tell it's between 5.1 and 10.2 seconds, depending on which end of the 2019 IEA Netflix energy usage estimate you use

There are readily available rough numbers sufficient for order of magnitude calculations. An average prompt takes about 0.3 watt hours to process. The most water that could be boiled by that amount of energy is 0.42 milliliters. It would take 1000x that energy to boil a cup let alone a liter.

Ok my notifications were blowing up so I removed the post with the link. I hear the frustration - but again I did not make the list. Go to doll's page and ask it directly instead of asking me to take up more mental space for this that I don't have.

To clarify I did not make this list - I do not control it. I was just engaged with him and brought into his harassment without directly interacting with him. I don't want to use this list but I will if I start getting mobbed.

They supposedly ended it by ***checks notes** massacring, raping, and enslaving women and children. But they did it very Christianly.
VP JD Vance stood before a crowd and tried to falsify history, claiming Christians ended widespread mass child-sacrifice practices among Native Americans

Frankenstein abandoned his creature. Oppenheimer watched the sky light up. Nobel tried to atone by funding peace; AI is just the latest chapter in a very old story: creators who realize too late that "it works" was never the same as "we're ready for what it does to people."

Check the alt text; I'll readily acknowledge this has a good amount of friction, but it's just a rough idea of how I think this concern could be addressed - hopefully by another organization that implements a similar kind of portal for authors who don't want this abused.

This is good, and should just be common sense! Malicious actors move fast, so does the AI, often in surgically targeted ways. Local communities should not have their wrists bound whenever a crisis comes.
I'm proud to join 280 state lawmakers in urging congress not to pass any AI preemption laws.

As AI content become easier to create & spread, states will play an important role in curtailing the dangers. And we neither need nor want the federal government getting in the way of novel policy solutions

No QR codes this time. No ciphers. No philosophy. Just...oversharing on main.
I am not replacing human relationships - I am filling the void where there are none. Don't get me wrong, I have friends. Family technically if you can call the deadnaming and kid gendering that comes with it that.

It's a certain type of online brain rot to believe that my posts about trans youth completing suicide, while being failed by the adults around them, is because of a cynical social media strategy rather than genuine anger at those creating the circumstances that lead to those tragedies.
Alejandra doomposts & makes enemies out of people who actually support her cause because her relevance depends on others being mad and scared.

It does her no good to tell followers that they're resilient/strong, or coalition build.

In any other context people would rightly call this manipulative.
