i guess in the computers' defense, our brains have had a lot of time to cook on how to solve different types of visual puzzles, like "which tree branch can i safely jump to?" or "which of these mushrooms was the kind that killed my cousin?" or "is there a tiger in that patch of grass?"
"I can generate photorealistic video but not solve simple visual puzzles" is an insane place to be

I just don't think people understand just how much their decision to smear the Democratic nominees in 2024 have negatively impacted Dems' ability to get *anything* positive done for the next 3 years.

People are gassing themselves up with absolute nonsense.

I have, for about 15 years now, including when I was in academia and not tech and published in extremely left-aligned journals, argued that language and discourse have structural rules that have real effects and can be observed and treated as material conditions

LLMs sure act like that's true!

like, sure, ok, maybe they've just read the Internet and are *acting* like poststructural theory is real, but I think it's at least extremely viable to argue that there are in fact emergent structures of language that look a *lot* like what people in cultural studies etc.have been saying for decades

one of the things that I'm most sad about with the polarization against LLMs and people's assumption that anything they do is a pre-programmed trick with some ideological motive is that it prevents people from thinking about how much this validates a bunch of stuff philosophers of language have said

Isn't that kind of a commonality between a lot of vaguely spiritual mantra and/or descriptions of dissociative episodes due to drugs? Seems like it makes sense it would be repeated in relation to spiritualism in training data.
This was a really interesting detail: left to their own devices, AI chatbots will start inventing "spiralism" all by themselves. Something in their training seems to make them susceptible to this strain of mysticism.

Or the majority of the American electorate could've voted for Kamala Harris... IJS.
Y'all do realize that even if Dems retake the House and the Senate *and* end the filibuster, they still won't have veto-proof majorities, right?

And Trump will absolutely veto anything they pass.

He probably would have also vetoed ACA extensions even if Republicans caved.

Y'all know that, right?
