Hello new people! I'm not super interesting, but I do write some literary criticism/analysis; info, short essays, and copies of as many published works as I'm allowed to hand out are at shilohcarroll.wordpress.com. I'm working on some fiction, too, and I'll post here if/when that takes off. 💜

So much of being an author is learning how to be a graphic designer, figuring out why your email campaigns are going to spam, posting about your books all the time, trying to make connections, and all I want is to WRITE!

I am once again asking folks not to repost every single post in a long thread, and especially not to do it in the order they're reading. A whole screen full of an extended argument that I've already read is bad enough. All that plus backwards makes me want to mute either the poster or the reposter.

Don’t adopt. Don’t buy in.
"All of this falls apart if humans don't adopt the tech. This is why you've seen Meta cram its lame chatbots into WhatsApp and Instagram. This is why Notepad and Paint now have useless Copilot buttons on Windows. This is why Google Gemini wants to "help you" read and reply to your emails."
Analysis: OpenAI is a loss-making machine, how can it survive?
Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?

I've been noticing this a lot, too, and it's baffling and exhausting
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

AI is a very general term, you have to be more specific. Do you mean the AI that stole my copyright, the chatbot causing teen suicide and psychosis, the deepfake porn of women without their consent, the bots driving political division or the ones polluting communities and driving electric bills up?

New CNF (my first!) is out now at @paranoidxtree.bsky.social 🛍️

I wrote it almost exactly a month before I quit this job and didn't think I would ever send it out. Grateful to the editors for picking this up and Ruth Baccam for grasping the crux of this story when they created the accompanying art 💞
"I spend too much on supportive shoes. There is a mound of black on the back of my door, hanging ghouls perfumed with company-gifted By Kilian—it is a wardrobe for a funeral, the mourning of."

New CNF by Jenny M. Liu. Sending solidarity to retail workers this season!

It's time for everyone's favorite chronologically unanchored holiday, The Story of the Lizard in the Leg.
Because people keep asking, the Story of The Lizard In That Dude's Leg. Some caveats:

1. This happened more than twenty years ago. There are no pictures. There was a small article in a local paper with, again, no pictures (I'm assuming that's what the producers of 9-1-1: LONE STAR found).

I *tried* to read this in 2020 but my notes say I quit reading because it went off the rails into some whack philosophy about halfway through. Can't wait to listen to this and see if I remember right.
Episode 46: Sapiens

It's an ambitious goal to write the entire history of humanity in just 400 pages. It's even more ambitious to do it without reading any research.
