“SB 827 was a BC/AD event for housing policy in America,” @hanlon.bsky.social says. “We’re not going to solve this through marginal tax credit, low-income housing projects. No. You just need to legalize fucking apartment buildings.”
Scott Wiener defeated California’s NIMBYs. Can he fix America’s housing crisis?
By running for Nancy Pelosi's House seat, he's putting the abundance theory to the test.

"So Wiener’s more than just an interesting lawmaker from America’s third-weirdest city. His nose-to-grindstone, hardcore policy approach could be a key to a political realignment—a long-overdue recognition that addressing housing is necessary for the survival of the Democratic Party."
Scott Weiner has forced California to build a lot more homes. Now he's running for Nancy Pelosi's seat. Can his "getting shit done" ethos work in a broken Congress?

this is the crux of the matter for me. I just don't believe Platner didn't know what he had on his skin for twenty years.

I can imagine forgiving an edgelord take on this but lying about it undermines the entire whole apology, such as there's an apology.
NOT ONCE in this interview does he address the claims by two different people, one of whom was his own political director, that he knew EXACTLY what it was and what it meant YEARS ago.

NOT ONCE does he address the Reddit thread he participated in years ago which DIRECTLY DISCUSSED the Totenkopf. 7/

The entirety of every urban area, including its suburbs, should be governed by one central local government with one school district. No more exclusive enclaves with snob zoning and pseudo-private schools.

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

my most woke opinion is that any truck/SUV over 4,000 pounds should require a commercial drivers license, increased insurance/registration, more expensive parking, and higher punishments for traffic violations

Borders should delineate legal sovereignty but should not be barriers to movement.

Deporting millions of undocumented immigrants who have built lives in America (a) is morally indefensible, and (b) will probably make the housing shortage *worse* because so much of the construction workforce is undocumented.
everyone keeps dancing around it but JD Vance keeps trotting out the “immigrants are taking our housing“ because it’s a nativist blood libel he’s engineering alongside eg “they eat our pets” but, more specifically, it is to legitimize the dispossession, en masse, of an entire sub-population.

While camera-based speed and red light enforcement are great and speed governors will help stop the worst repeat offenders, what we really need is for the police to actually enforce basic traffic laws like “you have to actually stop at stop signs and red lights” and “your car needs license plates.”

People think "politics" is what you say, but politics is in fact how you wield power. In that sense, driving a car is one of the most profound ways to reveal what your actual politics are.

How people drive reveals the sickness at the heart of our society: wanting power, but not responsibility.
It just needs to be way easier to lose your license and your car for reckless driving, because a few months of major societal disruption 5 years ago taught people that driving in such a way that kills others or themselves is nbd
so uhhhhh is anyone going to do anything about the epidemic of drivers just blasting through red lights these days? @timdonnelly.com investigates: nygroove.nyc/why-does-no-...

left NIMBYism is a study in cognitive dissonance and paradoxes:

the homes are simultaneously vacant yet full of rich people

the homes are simultaneously “luxury” yet “shitholes”

Driving in traffic is a dull and unpleasant chore and the only way Americans can escape having to do it all the time is by moving to one of three very expensive cities. This is bad and we should fix it.
appropos of going outside daily, I have to note that drivers have just absolutely and completely lost their minds. I'm amazed that it has, somehow, gotten continually worse

why do drivers do this to themselves. just in full psychopathic rage all the time, everywhere

Today is a good day to remember, and to say, that the #MeToo movement was right, and was righteous, and has been vindicated over and over again. There was no overreach. There was no excess. There was no they-went-too-far.

So much work remains to be done.

While artist housing is appealing in theory—who doesn't love The Arts?—artists are not uniquely deserving of housing and using scarce public money to build subsidized apartments for rich kids and are low-income by choice is wildly unjust.

We need cheap housing for *everyone,* not just RISD grads.

an unfunded IZ mandate didn't work? not only did it not work to increase affordably housing production, it almost killed it off entirely? wow
In 2018, then-Mayor Ada Colau called Barcelona’s new 30% inclusionary housing requirement for projects over 600m^2 a “paradigm shift,” making housing “a right and not a commodity.” It was supposed to produce 330 affordable units a year. The reality: just 31 affordable apartments in all these years.
Cuando se ha aprobó esta medida dije repetidamente que iba a ser un fracaso y que no construirían nada de vivienda asequible. Se ha probado en mil sitios y no funciona.

We have to turn the Growth Machine back on until median rent is less than 30% of median monthly income and median home prices are below 4x median annual household income.
amusing chart. it turns out New York City built more housing units in the 1920s than in the 1970s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, and 2010s put together www.nyc.gov/content/plan...
