TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Hannah Arendt: “The result of a consistent and total substitution of lies for factual truth is not that the lies will now be accepted as truth, and the truth be defamed as lies, but that the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world...is being destroyed.”
How are we supposed to trust the FBI & DOJ after years of watching Donald Trump denigrate & politicize them? That question was brought into sharp focus by the arrest earlier this week of Brian Cole, Jr., on bomb planting charges. joycevance.substack.com/p/charges-in...
Charges in the RNC/DNC Bomb Planting Case
Can we trust the FBI and this Justice Department after years of watching Donald Trump denigrate and politicize those previously independent agencies?

It's unfortunately difficult to find places to donate used good in many localities. But, please don't support Salvation Army by donating stuff for them to sell in their stores, either.
It's that giving time of year again, so this is a reminder that no matter how they try to dress it up, the Salvation Army is not a charity.

Date night last night-saw the new Nuremburg movie. While watching it, I thought it was too heavy-handed an allegory for current events. Discussion over dinner afterward suggests it was far too subtle.

Things I've neverthought about: cruise ships run on diesel. Even in port they still burn it for electric, adding pollution to the area. They could plug in to electric grid on land, but most terminals don't have that infrastructure: w42st.com/post/our-res...
“Our Residents are Suffocating” — Pols Push For Cruise Ships to Switch Off Engines and Plug In
The cruise business is booming — and so is air pollution on the West Side. The statistics are enough to take your breath away.

It was bound to happen sooner or later, but this is the first report I've seen of it. NYPD responded to call for carjacking, but it was ICE: gothamist.com/news/nypd-sa...
NYPD says 2 officers injured during Washington Heights ICE chase
NYPD officials said officers were unaware the people were federal immigration officers as their clothing concealed their identities.

Earlier this year, I met a Croatian journalist who was in the US doing a piece on America’s politics and I asked her what surprised her. And she said, “What you all call the far left is just being normal.”

I kind of love that BBC World Service, reporting on NYC mayor election, called Mamdani a "left-leaning Democrat". Not "left-wing", not "leftist", not "socialist".
I'm pretty sure no American news outlet would ever use that phrase.

Just tried watching Ezra Klein’s latest NYT podcast episode on how the U.S. got to this point where vaccines are so politicized.

It’s pretty clear that Klein and his guests—David Wallace Wells and Rachael Bedard—really do not understand why/how the political right turned on vaccines.

Came across this little post randomly the other day and I can't stop thinking about it. Maybe I should wait until Monday (Labor Day) to share? But, I don't want to forget.

it's remarkable how quickly "tren de aragua" went from something i had never heard of to a crisis so urgent centuries-old safeguards of liberty and due practice had to be cast aside, even at the acknowledged cost of some innocents getting pressed into indefinite detention and enslavement.
