I think everyone should get to know the west African term “wahala”.

It generally means “chaos”, “confusion”, or “drama”. A clusterfuck.

I’ve been on a mission for years to use it more regularly in my work.

Because—- *gestures at everything*

See wahala?!???

the quality and range of services public libraries provide relative to what they cost is nothing short of a miracle imo. But yeah, sure, “run government like a business.” 📚

The Irish phrase is codladh grifín, "sleep tingling". This is the only context in which the word "grifín" (tingling) occurs! Though other words for tingling do exist...

Other phrases I’ve come across about pins and needles (mostly from the creative minds of small children)…

7. I have fizzy boots on
6. My arm has gone sparkly
5. I have thorns and prickles
4. I have crumbles in my foot
3. I have sprinkles in my toes
2. My foot went dizzy
1. I’ve got pins and weasels

A lovely Icelandic term for pins and needles (tingling after your foot goes numb) is stjörnur í skónum, or “stars in your shoes.” A Yoruba version is pajapaja (“kill dog kill dog”). And the best one I’ve heard in German (uttered by a friend’s child) was mein Fuß glitzert. It means “my foot twinkles”

@mikeisraetel.bsky.social Curious word-nerd here: Why is 'eccentric' pronounced ek-sen-trik in every context except weight training, where it's pronounced ee-sen-trik? Did Arnold just mispronounce it bc his English wasn't v good yet and then everyone just went along bc, well, he's fuckin Arnold?
