The Nazi SA - Sturmabteilung, or Storm Troopers - were often recruited from the dregs of society: barely literate failures incapable of holding down a job and only fit for murder and terror. The scum of Germany. Hitler gave them free rein to vent their rage on their betters. Sound familiar, America?

How you doing today? You okay? It was a rough one for a lot of us. There's nothing wrong with you if you're anxious, angry, depressed, or just confused. There's no reason you should be good at this. This is not in any way normal or acceptable.

Be as kind to yourself as you can

Two women trained as first responders were abducted by three ICE agents. One of the agents starts seizing. The other two don’t know what to do. The women jump into action and save the agent’s life, only to be re-handcuffed and processed.

This is why they can't believe older people rely on Medicaid. "Have you tried liquidating some of your assets first" yeah okay
The Trump administration's idea of a "mom and pop" investor is a hypothetical couple that owns 5-12 investment properties.

The Cheers oral history in Vanity Fair (I believe) had it as the last TV series written by people who didn't grow up watching television. I've never forgotten that.
"If you watch an episode of Cheers, you might hear references to foreign filmmakers, to classical musicians, to Russian novelists. The level of assumed knowledge back then was far greater; now, TV is rarely adventurous in its allusions."

I cannot emphasize how much “be the news” is the opposite of what I was taught about how to be a good journalist and strikes me as an excellent way to churn out elite solipsism that has nothing to do with the public interest and everything to do with self promotion www.nytimes.com/2026/01/13/b...

A+ column here:
My Stop the Presses newsletter calls for more aggressive action by the media to be "radically truthful" and defeat the liars:
/ Correct *every* lie uttered on your platform.
/ Put Trump's remarks on tape delay for proper fact checks.
/ Cut off liars in mid-interview and ban them from your airwaves.
How to build a radically truthful news outlet
The old ways don’t work. Time to declare war on the liars.

It's actually a good thing that previously apolitical normies are finally getting angry and starting to speak out. We need the numbers in the streets and at the polls.

If your response to them is "no, fuck you, too late," then you don't actually care about stopping Trump. You're just preening.

There is no attitude for which legacy journalists are more often rewarded by their bosses than "Everybody needs to calm down." It is a preening announcement that you are the adult in the room, immune from emotion or overreaction or "hysteria." And it is the worst imaginable priority for this era. >

There are good journalists out there who grasp that we are living in an emergency moment, at the mercy of serial liars, bigots, and government thugs. They are steady. They are clear-eyed. They understand what is needed. And they have been right exponentially more often than the "calm down" crew.

Please reach out to discuss what to do with the money you've raised for No Kings.

“Can a journalist tell the truth about January 6 without consequences? Increasingly it depends on which media company the journalist works for.”
COMMENTARY: It seems an increasing number of Americans, including elected leaders and journalists, are afraid to tell the truth about what happened on January 6. That's dangerous.
