i'm in far too cynical and brainweird a mood today to watch the game awards so i've just been enjoying getting some of it through osmosis. the lows and the not so lows.

SaGa 2 has a funny little guy called Haniwa that's a rare encounter in the final dungeon.

It doesn't look threatening, but it can pull out a seven-pronged sword that does more damage than anything else, even the final boss!

That includes the harder version of the final boss in the DS remake!

I re-did and re-uploaded the Shogaku Ichinensei 1992 August chapter for #Zelda Link to the Past. This one has some of the best art out of all of them and I feel like that's saying something. I cleaned it and put it in its own folder at 2400dpi archive.org/details/zine...

every year people tune into the game awards and spend the next forty-eight hours thinking "maybe i don't like video games"

was thinking about this again last night with pokemon gold version, another rpg from that era, which also has a really tight resource economy. olivine to cianwood left me with four fainted pokemon, two with very low yellow hp.
I really prefer the tighter economy of the GBC release. it enables the formation of tense, organic moments - like last night, when I had Just enough MP (16MP) to exit a dungeon (8MP) and warp to town (8MP).

The second LaserDisc Rip today is rarer than the first, and also is by Japanese City Pop artist Tats Yamashita.

at the same part in Dragon Quest III in both GBC and the remake. the resource economy differences are massive - HD-2D, I've got over half a dozen Prayer Rings and other miscellaneous MP healing items. if I've found a single Prayer Ring on GBC, I already used it.

lot of responses to the headline's rhetorical question (and it's a cute article that interviews young hobbyists). none wrong, all reflections of The Times, but the simple truth is that "retro tech" still does exactly what it was made to do, and largely provides a quality experience.
