This kind of thing is less fashionable than it used to be, but really worth looking into whether people saying an enormous amount of data center expansion will actually be good for climate and affordability have financial ties to people with a direct financial interest in data center expansion

I do wish people would talk about efficiency in terms of something other than which cuts to make. No one ever seems to want to talk about how it could be more efficient to spend money rather than withhold it, or to add some slack so that your workers aren't stressed out all the time.

Pete is saying that DOGE as a concept is good, but it was poorly executed. But it’s all bullshit. Federal employees do an amazing job and are already ultra-efficient and it’s bullshit to say otherwise. It’s very disappointing for him to grant that the premise was a good one. Astonishingly stupid.

This is narcissism masquerading as philosophy — the technophile elite are not recognizing a new soul in AI, they're falling in love with their creation, staring at their own reflection in a digital pool.

It is the ultimate in solipsism and has its roots in a pathological fear and denial of death.

People looking for signs of change often assume the change that matters most, the watershed, the rubicon, the turning point will be a dramatic event. But a case can be made that the changes that matter most happen in minds and hearts, and the events follow from that.

Everything changed in the last few weeks. The Republicans, assumed by themselves and too many others, to be unstoppable got stopped again and again. Public opinion manifested in many ways: as an elect...

For those not up on vaccine schedules - the reason it is significant that the mothers weren't is because infants don't get their pertussis vaccine until 2 mo of age, making it important for pregnant people to get their booster before giving birth (and for all people around the newborn to do so too)
3 infant #pertussis deaths this year in Kentucky. "Of the three infant deaths reported over the past 12 months, all three were not vaccinated, nor were their mothers."

We first tested maternal vaccination for whooping cough over 80 years ago. It's safe & effective & might have saved these babies.

The article is worse than the headline suggests. I am trying to avoid American politics online but as the brother of someone like this, this story really upset me. The idea of him being separated from his mother for 54 days, seeing her only 3 times, facing emergency surgery alone, is heartbreaking
Emmanuel, a 15-year-old with intellectual disabilities, wandered away from his mom’s fruit stand in October.

She reported him missing to Houston police. But instead of reuniting them, the city turned him over to ICE.

“They’re failing all of us,” his mom said.
