My grandmother came through Ellis Island at age 6 in 1903 with her mother and 2 brothers from Hungary. No questions asked other than who is meeting you on this end. My great grandfather had arrived a year earlier and was employed as a glassblower in Alton Illinois.
We also allowed things legally for the largely European wave that we don't any more. Why is that? So many don't want to think about this or ask.
The most common response I get as an Irish- American is "we did it legally" and then they have absolutely no interest in learning about historical trends in immigration. Ellis Island had a checkbox for stowaways and they think they're the product of some highly vetted process.

This took some getting used to when I moved here. Our closest takeout is a deli counter in a small grocery 6 miles away. We have to cook and avoid processed food at the same time. Using minimal boxes or cans is time-consuming. I could not do it while employed full time.
One way people in more urban areas differ from those in the sticks is this constant DoorDash debate.
Cooking every day is a goddamn drag even when you like cooking. But having the option NOT to cook is a luxury.
DoorDash doesn’t exist here. You can go get takeout. Not even pizza is delivered.
