NEW: What can citizens of gerrymandered states do when their representatives ignore the people's will? Stephen McAllister compares KS and MO's very different approaches to direct democracy to highlight the importance of the citizen-driven initiative process in countering resistant legislatures.
Differences in Kansas and Missouri Show Importance of Initiative Process
Unlike Kansans, Missouri voters can use ballot initiatives to enact laws and amendments their lawmakers refuse to pass.

They can’t even control their white women to do their bidding, things must be worse than we could have hoped
Several female lawmakers have been increasingly defying Speaker Mike Johnson on legislative matters and lobbing public broadsides at him, including a member of Johnson’s own leadership team.
Some House Republican women are in open revolt against Speaker Mike Johnson
Female lawmakers in the House GOP conference have had some high-profile splits with leadership in recent weeks. Some are heading for the exits.

And there has never been any need to defend eugenics.
NEVER.
There are ZERO ethical, moral, philosophical or scientific justifications for eugenics.
You cannot have just a smidge of "nice" eugenics.

I usually don’t care that random people on here put me on block + mod lists but to put me on one called “Eugenacists and transphobes” is wild. I am neither and welcome being corrected if I have posted/reposted something that indicates otherwise. Always willing to learn @kaffikopp.bsky.social

yes, this is so important. Was *just* talking about this in my BioAnth class. Students were shocked to see the quotes from leading scientists and scholars who thought this was a great idea. The textbooks were full of eugenic ideas.

and this is a great thread that i'm gonna save for future classes
1. Historically, eugenics was not a pseudoscience. It was *science* Almost every scientist, social scientist, academic, etc. believed in the validity of eugenics. You would have to search far & wide to find a scientist that didn't believe in some form of it. They taught it in college!

Ya man, fuck those people who want to breathe clean air, we want to bring back a wood paneled station wagon that no one has bought in 20 years.

I have chronic asthma and long COVID complications in my lungs, this is going to fuck everyone in the long run.
Sean Duffy on slashing fuel economy standards: "This rule will actually allow you to bring back the 1970s station wagon. Maybe a little wood paneling on the side. We can bring back choice to consumers."

We can thank Nancy for backing him these last few years instead of progressive candidates.
Trump pardoned Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas (an repeated progressive target in Dem primaries, he narrowly survived multiple times) from bribery and conspiracy charges.

Cuellar just thanked him profusely on social; obvious questions as to whether Cuellar switches parties.

Two years ago she tried to run for some office in MO and barely got votes in the primary. She’s looney fucking toons on top of the racism and Islamaphobia.
Valentina Gomez announced her run for Texas’ 31st Congressional District with one of the most vile racist messages I’ve ever seen:

“Vote for me so we can kick every dirty Muslim out of Texas.
Save your daughters from getting ra**d by Muhammad”

To fascists, words don’t have meanings, words are merely tools to get what you want, especially power for yourself.

In a way, Hegseth’s stance is consistent.

2016: refuse orders while Obama is president no matter the legality

2025: follow orders while Trump is president no matter the illegality
NEW VIDEO: We uncovered footage showing Pete Hegseth in 2016 saying the military won’t follow unlawful orders — the same point he has recently criticized Democrats, including Sen. Mark Kelly, for making - and which Trump has said is punishable by death.

I wish I could go back in time and punch all of the “parents choice” idiots in the nose who were protesting about masks and lifesaving COVID vaccines being mandatory in 2020

Let me lovingly say to the left that this bit about “who cares about the details, we understand the big picture” is stupid and dangerous and the right is winning partly because they pay very close attention to our details and exploit weaknesses accordingly

No matter what happens in this election, the shifts toward dem candidates are a nugget of something wonderful taking shape.

I’m overly pessimistic with most things politics and otherwise but this does give me some hope that Americans are waking up.
looks like two completed counties (v red rurals) with Behn improving on Harris by 10 in one and 15 in the other -- huge shifts but not winning shifts

the Needle took a big dive to the right on the reporting of the Williamson County early vote, now R+5.7

betting markets now aligning on 5+ pt margin
