Whenever I see pseudoscientific conspiracy theories about ancient aliens or giant petrified trees or ice age satellites or whatever it drives me crazy because THE EARTH IS COOL ENOUGH JUST AS IT IS! WE DON’T NEED TO REACH FOR REASONS TO MAKE IT MORE INTERESTING! HAVE YOU SEEN A TULLY MONSTER??!!

"Survival"

Cone 5.5 stoneware, underglaze, glaze, nichrome wire

A piece about caring and bonding deeply intertwined with survival, and death as a legacy to the building of love and community.

When people claimed that AI is the new electricity, I thought of all of the quack uses for electricity in the early years, especially "cures." Same with radioactivity. Early users of electricity also burned a lot of buildings down until we learned where and when and how to make it useful AND safe.
I'm convinced AI is our generation's radium - a discovery with genuinely useful applications in specific, controlled circumstances that we stupidly put in everything from kid's toys to toothpaste until we realised the harm far too late where future generations will ask if we were out of our minds.

Awww, these two ❤️ One of my few weekly rituals is checking for the latest from Oglaf (their Patreon is also full of treasures, highly recommended.)
It's NSFW in the best way.
Now I want to hear more about their Safetyhammer shorts!

So, right now, the only reliable way to diagnose endometriosis is with exploratory surgery. But finally, real scientists (instead of male scientists), are on the job & of course they’ve identified multiple markers in menstrual blood that point to noninvasive testing.

@zefrank.bsky.social fodder for a new episode?
I can't overrecommend this incredible paper about water skaters (genus Halobates). No one knows how they evolved. No one knows what they eat. They are superhydrophobic, which means water LITERALLY CANNOT WET THEM. Perhaps we should call them anti-water skaters? 🌊🧪

Why did only one genus of insects, Halobates, take to the high seas?
Oceans cover over 70% of the earth’s surface and house a dizzying array of organisms, including five species of the peppercorn-sized ocean-skater Halobates, which live exclusively at the ocean surface...

How is this justified?

Artists are record keepers. They don't just capture history, they preserve the visceral feeling of an emotional moment in time. Fascists despise them for good reason.

Worth remembering when looking at the horrific scenes in the US right now that both Reform and the Tories have pledged to bring in ICE-style organisations to the UK if they win power

I'm inclined to think the US administration knows full well what they're doing. Drop in a gaff or two, and let SM do its thing. And it works like a charm every time. We buffer the brutality with the buffoonery.

Literally took two minutes! Please call!
If you're in New York, please take two minutes right now to call Governor Hochul and tell her to support and sign New York 4 All, which would prevent state and local agencies from collaborating with ICE.

This is important.

Research into how violence occurs shows that disapproval from the people around you can help reduce it.

Sitting here thinking "what would Murderbot do" in any of the hundred horrible situations happening in the states right now. Probably do something to help an individual or small group, while trying not to have a system shutdown. No wonder we identify with these books.

🚨"This is nuts! What the f*ck is going on, this is insane! ICE is just trying to scare people; they tell you it's only immigrants—it's f*cking anybody!" -furious Minneapolis resident tells our @zdroberts.bsky.social after ICE shot a man in the leg tonight. LIVE NOW ⬇️

This 🧵 looks like a good one. I haven't even gotten into the original string, but yeah, they're trying to make blue cities fearful.
Given what's happening in Minneapolis, I wanted to re-up this thread of writing from Chicagoans about what it felt like when the ICE/CBP terror campaign was focused on us. It seems clear that the fear is the point and they're refining and escalating as they move from place to place.
I'm struck by how many Chicagoans have seemingly felt compelled to write and share reflections on "this is what it feels like in Chicago right now". We know we're going through something awful together and we want the world to understand it.

Threading several of these pieces below.

Share your knowledge if/when you can. Teaching other people how to do what you do doesn’t lessen your art - it just means more and better art for everyone.

I appreciate when people are willing to tell me about their brushes, how they study, etc… I want to put that back out into the world.
